White wedding Hydrangea spacing

Hi again, still working on a plan for my foundation garden... (going slightly insane but it's fine, I'm fine)
So I have an 11.5' wide, 8' deep space that I'm trying to squeeze in 4 Nandina (lemon lime, 3' wide, to cover the foundation in winter) and 2 or 3 white wedding hydrangea (3-5' wide, in front of the nandina) under planted with purple pixie loropetalum (~4', will hang over the rock wall edge).
Question is: should I do 2 or 3 hydrangeas? I've always heard to plant in odd numbers.
Would 2 planted closely look like 1 big wide one? Or dumb?
ALSO should I plan for them to be 3 or 5 feet wide? That's a little confusing for me. I feel like if I prune them I can keep them closer to 3 or 4' wide

@dianela7analabama 4 to 6 feet in the ground sounds right.

You need to plant a minimum of 3' away from the wall of the house. 3' wide nandina + 5' wide hydrangea = 8' feet of space. There is no room for 4' of lorepetalum and not really enough for nandina + hydrangea.

If you want a shrub to be 3' or 4' wide ... that's only one plant.

The "odd numbers rule" is immaterial when the above-ground portion of the finished product will grow together as a single mass. And there are other cases -- such as 'bookending' -- where it doesn't apply.

I will second the zinnia, cosmos and cleome. All of them really hit their stride for me in early fall. Dahlia also will do the same if you direct sow into the garden in late May. The only perennial I can think of is Boltonia snowbank although, at least here, it reaches its peak in September. Maybe cutting it back in June will delay this and give more flowers.

If you like unusual white moderately compact lacecaps l, also consider 'Lanarth White'. Gets 4 maybe 5' and flowers look like a Dogwood! Like Wedding Gown they keep opening over time in the center to make a fuller head. Beautiful dark glossy leaves too.

Amy it has been three years since this post. Could you please let me know how big did your White Wedding hydrangeas get? I love the ones I bought this year but I am wondering if they come close to being 6 feet tall or 3-4 feet? Thank you in advance for your help.

@dianela7analabama I have White Wedding in a large container and it reached to about 3.5 feet tall, about 3 feet wide.

Thank you Westes for your reply. Maybe if it is able to get to 3.5 feet in a pot It can get to 6 in the ground? I am surprised I can’t find much on this one here or in YouTube after how well it has performed here on its first season.

Hard to say but potting does tend to keep the size in check somewhat.
