whole house Board & Batten?

I am in the process of building this home and I am using 12” white vinyl board and batten siding.
I’m hoping you all can help me decide whether to do the whole house in B&B( I’m using white brick on the back porch) or mix 7” vinyl plank siding on the other 3 sides?
I will have a black roof and black casement window if that helps.
I’m suffering from decision fatigue🤪

Comments (13)Marie, Thank you for your kind note. I'm intriged by something you said, are you within the city limits? It's rare that I've heard of someone with the amount of property that you have to be within the limits and under the jurisdiction of a township. Are there restrictions on your property? If there are, you might consider going before the city council or the county supervisors to apply for a nonrestrictive or agracultural zoning. If you can get this done, you'll have a greater number of options concerning your home and the aminities. So far as the wind mill goes, if you put in a windmill to pump water to a holding tank for livestock, and just happen to wire it for electricity, what can they say? It just happens to be serving a dual purpose. Also, if you have a stream of some kind on your property you might consider putting in a waterwheel to generate the power you want. The mechanics are quite simple and there's not a thing anyone can say about it, especially if you use the waterwheel as a decoration, or a pump for the water tank concept. So far as the outhouse concept is concerned, have you thought about "humanure"? It's a fantastic way to aquire composting material for your garden or potting shed. There are books on the subject if you want to consider it. I have learned, over the years, that there are always ways around politicians and their supossed control. It just takes a little creative thinking. If you are going to consider the "Livestock tank" idea, find a earth moving company and ask if they happen to have any old tires off of their biggest machines that they want to get rid of. Once you find one, take it to the location that you want to set up the tank. Once you have your pipe ran, making sure that it comes up about 2' above the ground, your boyfriend and several of his buddys can set it over the pipe. Then pour cement into the bottom until it comes up over the edge of the inside rim of the tire and let it set until it is cured. Then take a chainsaw and cut the top rim of the tire off, and presto, you have a tank that didn't cost you anything but the gas to go get it, the cost of the pipe, and the cement. That's about a 500.00 water tank for about 30.00. You were talking about going to PA to check out some log home companies. Don't forget to check out suppliers in KY and Tennessee as well. We have about eight within 50 miles of where I live, (Athens, TN. Half way between Knoxville and Chattanooga). Also, don't forget to check with some of the regular sawmills. They might do the milling of the logs for the log homes, but don't advertise as doing so, or they might know of another mill that does that. I wish you all the luck in the world in getting this done. Comments (16)Well I have to trust the architect here and go with a natural color, and have hunter orange doors. They know best, right? My masterpiece: Jokes aside, I've run renders on a few other colors available, and slept on the whole idea. Right now I feel like any deviation from my original white/black idea is a compromise I might regret. Not once have I had second thoughts on it. Lately seeing it becoming trendy is one thing, but there's no other houses in my area that are similar. Changing a color changes the whole idea of simplicity I had, at least in my opinion. Everyones idea's are wonderful, and I think I could make them work well on this house. Like blue or green with wood accents. Or simple white with white. I wanted a red house at one point too, but there's already 2 on the same street. Adopting any of these ideas however, has a cascading effect on other design elements beyond just a palette swap. These were my 2 main inspirational houses: When I saw these I thought, "wow, that's it!" In todays world of hyper-personalization of everything, I've eschewed variety and always gone with simple. I wear 1 brand of plain T-shirt, jeans, shorts. I like authentic, and I like quality. When I look at these houses, I feel I see a reflection of myself. No fascades or stuck on details, just a house. It's so rare to see a house not try to have standout features that it's unique to not have uniqueness, if that makes sense. It does to me. Thank you for the feedback, it's helped me move forward with more conviction. Marjen, anderson 400 windows are wood, and they'll need finishing anyways, so finishing them black is no difference. My house isn't in the right price range to really justify wood windows, much less triple glazed wood. Comments (7)You can definitely mix B & B and lap siding. I like shakes but your house seems to have a more modern vibe so I would probably not use them on your house. You have to be careful on how you mix the types of siding so it doesn't look too busy or disjointed. You could use one style on the gables and another on the rest of the house. 4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoThe design seems to be lacking a cohesive design concept probably because there are so many strong edges on a small house and board & batten siding will not help IMO.
I recommend shortening the rake projections, eliminating the mutton chops and letting the main roofs be continuous to the porch eave. Check out the elegance of the Tidewater South tradition.

4 years agoHi shead....I never intended to use vinyl but I found house in my area that has 12” vinyl board and batten. It’s a renovation and the architectural style doesn’t call for it in my opinion but I was super impressed with the appearance. So much so that I climbed in the bin to get a scrap to see who made it🤣
Not sure how well it shows in this photo but I agree that LVP is super nice!

2 years ago@Brandi Nicole I used Certainteed 12" insulated vinyl board & batten and I LOVE it!
It's 10" board and 2" batten. I ended up doing the whole house...you may have to zoom in to see it but I tried to give you a front and side angle. The other pics are the back porch. It's simple and clean (and maintenance free!) which is exactly what I wanted. Hope it helps!
