Training established fruit trees to grow on there own roots

Has anybody ever been in a situation where they wanted to train there fruit trees to start growing on there own roots?

I have about a ten year old apricot tree grafted onto western sand cherry roots. They don't live long and the tree has maxed out in size at about 8ft. I planted it with the graft union well above the soil line. Wondering if there is any techniques I could use , perhaps use an airpot around the trunk and slit some wounds into it with some rooting hormone than fill the pot around the trunk with something like peat/coco and keep it moist to produce roots ?

Ive heard of people planting the trees deep when young to force them to grow on own roots but I’ve seen what can happen if they do not root they will end up rotting and dying
