Do you have/have you used pewter flatware?
Comments (7)I use sterling most of the time and never use it in the dishwasher. However, a number of posters here have discussed this in the past and they do use their DWs for sterling, some even place their knives in their DWs, tempting the fates with that issue of composite flatware. That's why I asked the question about pewter. I'm feeling like going a bit less formal for a change, but I'm not a big fan of any of the stainless steel flatware that I've seen. Actually, I don't care for the feel of it in my hand. I have had a set of stainless since we married that felt heavy; however, it is now missing some pieces, and the company has been bought by another, offshore, and, though the same name is used for the pattern, the pattern is now very chintzy and rough; and the replacement pieces do not match the originals. So, I've given up on the stainless idea. Still, I need a set of something informal....See MoreHelp deciding shiplap color for fireplace
Comments (17)Everything depends on the architectural style of your house, and your other finishes, furnishings and equipment. One doesn't simply design a fireplace in isolation here on this forum and think that it's going to fit in and complement your interiors. Can you say something more about your interior design and furnishings? Here's a range of ideas. Do you see how some may fit your specific interiors and others not? The fact that the ceiling beams are in place and do not consider the location and design of your fireplace is problematic, and probably means it will be best to not carry any sort of fireplace treatment up to the intersection with the ceiling and beams unless it can be done in some sort of visually logical connection. See one of the photos below for an example. Good luck on your project....See Morestone/brick/or shiplap for fireplace
Comments (33)This is an old converstion but would like to add a little. Here in New England, in expensive coastal homes, shiplap is classic(not a fad) on and around fireplaces, in living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens kitchens, and entryways/mud rooms. It is no more a risk than any other material as it is placed over the stone structure of the fireplace. It uses a fireproof adhesive that insulates against extreme heat and protects the wood. Using a gloss or semi-gloss paint will allow you to wipe off any soot/smoke discoloration that may occur down the road. Those referring to it as a material of poor people are out of touch or unaware of its historical use. The white pine of New England made the finest shiplap for homes as well as the whaling/fishing boats and battleships. The modern materials are of very high wuality and quite durable if you choose wisely. Disregard MDF shiplap unless you want it to look cheap or you need absolute uniformity. That wont give you the classic look and feel though. I suggest birch if its available, for its resistance to humidity and water. You can recreate any style home yiu want in any location. There are no rules about maintaining pueblo homes only in the south west, or a craftsman only in California and the midwest. Doing so is an exercise in suppressing your own creativity and vision. Be true to yourself and live your ideal life regardless of future concerns. Dont worry about what buyers may want in 5-10 years unless you are just flipping a home. Comments (17)Thanks everyone for ringing in and sharing your thoughts! Louiseab, a holiday bread might also be also called a quick bread or known by other names. You could even bake up a bunch of pound cakes around the holidays and call them holiday breads. More examples of holiday breads might be banana bread, zucchini bread, and lemon poppyseed bread. These are more of a *sweet* baked good than it is a true crusty bread-baked-in-a-pan & put some butter on it bread -- i.e. for me, for example, Irish Soda Bread would not be considered a holiday bread even if I make it as a Christmas gift. I bake a lot of these during the Christmas holidays and give them as gifts to family, friends, and others like our mailman, our vet's office, neighbors, etc. Sometimes I do cookies. Holiday breads are pretty easy. You can also buy disposable aluminum *mini* loaf pans, and you get more loaves for the amount of batter you make. Here's a link to one that looks good on allrecipes: Allrecipes zucchini bread HTH!...See MoreUser
