Help with bare-root hostas, Please?
Comments (12)I wouldn't try to "hold" them for a month at this point, but I'm very surprised that you would get bare root hostas in wood shavings this time of year. Had they been recently dug or are the completely dormant, as if they were dug a year ago? The problem is that if they were dug a year ago they will want to start growing as soon as you plant them, thinking it is spring. They will try to put down some roots while it is warm, then when you do get cold there they will start that cycle to go dormant. If you wait a month and plant them you are risking a greater shock if the weather is colder then. They will use a lot of energy to try and grow which will make them weaker when winter comes. As I see it the best thing is to put them in the ground, 2nd best would be to pot them up in some well-draining potting soil, and 3rd option would be to just do the hail Mary and leave them in the basement for another month in their wood shavings, and hope for the best. Hopefully they were cheap enough that if they don't grow it won't be a big deal....See Moredesigning my first kitchen please help
Comments (5)The kitchen as pictured does not suit a waterfall island. Waterfall islands are also difficult and expensive to get done right. The veins have to flow exactly on all sides, which means extra slabs, the sides have to be mitered perfectly, and where the floor and Quartz meet has to be done correctly. Don't forget the electrical requirements for an island, which are made a bit more difficult with the waterfall sides. This is all for a look that does not appear to go in the kitchen you have pictured. I'd spend that money instead on better appliances, or any number of improvements and enhancements a kitchen can have. Edited to add: A backsplash that you asked about should be chosen absolutely last, after everything else is installed. Everything looks different once installed, and if you choose a backsplash too early, you will make a mistake....See MoreHelp with bareroots please -- larkspur

Comments (31)Good advice about being wary of what gets planted with the pool. Not just tree roots but tree flowers, seeds, and leaves are a constant bother with a pool. You might be able to add taller trellises here and there to the fence, and train flowering vines on them, for more privacy. One thing that helped budget wise was to wait to buy plants until late summer/early fall, when nurseries and big box stores heavily discount shrubs and perennials. Most of my shrubs and trees were acquired that way, saving 50-75%. As someone above said, take the time this summer to prepare the areas for planting. "Most bang for the buck improvement items" is pretty vague - can you make a list of specific improvements you want to see, then order it by what is most important to you and/or a pressing issue that needs fixing? (pressing need = things like bad drainage, improper roof runoff, a patch of invasive weeds, rotten fence boards). Also most do-able. I would spend some time at the library, looking at home & garden magazines (my library has gone to all on-line that I can view from home) and checking out books to get more solid ideas of the way you want things to look in the end. See if "walkable" ground covers would work in your area, instead of sod - to cut down on the mowing, fertilizing, weed control etc. Do you have any family members who would pitch in to help? Maybe a preteen or teen for a few dollars?...See Moremmmm12COzone5
