Furniture living room Home Decorating

Just moved and need help setting up living room

We just moved in and I’m having a hard time deciding the layout of the furniture for the living room. We have a sofa and love seat that are new as well as an electric fireplace. The tv already had a spot cut out in the wall for it. See pics attached.

Would you pull out the love seat from the

window to bring it closer? Not sure if a sofa table could fill the space behind it so it’s not empty.

My husband loved the green recliner chair but it needs to go, if it was up to me it would be two accent chairs on that side of the room. How could you pair a recliner (new colour) and an accent chair?

Any advice is much appreciated! The room is approx 12 feet by 17.5 feet.

Is this your room? Having the sofa and chairs against the wall makes for a less friendly looking and disjointed room. Can you actually reach the coffee table (which I love) from any of the seating? I would try pulling all the pieces closer to the center, place a skinny sofa table behind the sofa and plants behind the chairs if necessary. The chair posted above is quite vibrant and may take over everything else in the room. I like the print, but maybe in a fabric less in-your-face. It would be helpful to see photos of the room from further back and framing the fireplace so we can see the distance between things more accurately.

Please move your painting down so that the bottom edge is about 8 inches above the top edge of the sofa. Find a console for the TV that is quite a bit longer than the TV and rather low, with doors behind which you can hide the messy stuff. Google TV consoles and you'll find hundreds of styles in every price range. Put up a long curtain rod, long enough so the curtains clear the window when they're pulled back, below the narrow window and put up curtains that are fairly light in color so the room doesn't look smaller. I suggest a carpet that is fairly colorful, and it would be great to use your painting as a color inspiration. You need warm colors to offset the gray of the wall and couch. Definitely a few pillows in colors taken from the rug. Move that gray bench thingie, perhaps to your bedroom, and find a small but comfortable armchair for added seating. Forget about the horrible overhead lights and get at least one table lamp (two would be better) for warmer lighting that doesn't turn people a ghastly color. A few pillows in happy colors so your furry friend will have something to cuddle against.

you have a very lovely room. you may want to consider a Chesterfield style sofa in a grey. I would place the sofa across from the fireplace and then the two chairs looking out the window... not sure if you have enough room for two sofas. looks like you also need to place a kitchen table and chairs too. insay that because with the open area you have, it may start to look crowded. heres a grey chesterfield sofa with some ivory chairs to give you an idea of how it would look with your chairs.

Maybe make the sofa and love seat look like sectional....place the arms at angles to each other with arms touching and sofa and loveseat backs against the two walls with sofa on longest wall. Put chairs next to each other side by side on open area opposite the love seat. Add arc lamp behind where arms touch of sofa and loveseat. Does that work? Just guessing here?

Your furniture should be in a ‘U’ shape now with the cocktail tables in front of sofa and centered on the TV? Post a pic if you like it? Laugh if you don’t!

Susan, yes was thinking of doing that! Just hard to center in front of the tv with the backs being against the walls, I have to pull the love seat from the wall to make that work.

Hello again Shelby, Please post measurements of the room including the openings on either side of the fireplace. Also would you and your husband consider getting a loveseat recliner that matches the other brown furniture? Then you would have plenty of seating and the recliner for your husband. How about replacing the coffee table or staining it another color to match the sofas?

Perhaps a loveseat like this one.

Sorry about that Shelby. I see the room measurements. What I need is the measurements of the openings on either side of the fireplace and the measurement of the fireplace.

Hi there, sorry for the late reply. To be honest I would prefer no leather furniture so would be looking for new pieces in a fabric. And yes coffee table was not staying.. was going to look for a rectangular one in a different colour.

Measurement of fireplace wall: 71 inches, actual fireplace is 50 inches long 16 inches wide.

Openings on either side: are approximately 52.5 inches

Hello Shelby,

Here are some pictures/ideas/suggestions for your consideration.

Picture #1 is of the living room using what you have and adding some décor.

#2 is if you could switch rooms the dinning room for the living room. It would be much better to be able to walk into a living room instead of a dinning room. I understand that it would mean pulling the wires for the TV into the other room but I hope that an electrician could do that easily for you. Just a thought.

Clarification questions:
1. You are keeping the 3 seater and love seat leather couches?
2. Getting rid of the recliner and the other love seat next to the recliner?
3. Are you open/able to switch rooms?
4. How do you feel about getting a 2 seater/love seat recliner that would match the size of the love seat you already have?
5. If you are letting go of the two couches; what about a sectional?
Let me know what you want and I can change the 3D image so you can see what it would look like with the changes.
