Tom's sister-in-law is a master quilter and earlier this year she offered to make me a quilt. I gave her some of his shirts, comfy pants that he wore around the house, the Ride for Dad badges etc. She then asked for pics of the cats or any other memoirs. So I sent those as well as pic of his drum kit.

He always made me Texas Chili as I don't like beans in my chili so that recipe is embroidered, as are the 2 most meaningful sayings that I have as my email signatures.

One of his treatments was getting monthly radium injections. He found "I'm radiant" online and got it made onto a t-shirt. It made him smile when he'd wear it (as did the medical team when he wore it to a couple of treatments)

I went for a drive this weekend to pick it up.......social distancing measures ensured. Quite the emotional drive home as you can imagine.

Tom's Sister-in-law most not only have loved him, but must love you as well. What a wonderful keepsake. It would have been very difficult for me, social distancing and all, not to give a big hug. I can just see you all wrapped up in this beautiful piece of love.

It's always tough to loose a loved one, but your Grandpa sure had a nice, long run for his money, didn't he....all my family die before 65, I'm afraid... all except one grandmother who lived till 94...she's my one hope for longevity!!! If Grandpa wore ties, I have a wonderful book...Shirley Botsford's DADDYS TIES. In it are great ideas of memory type things to make with ties and, in many cases, sort of dress shirts....I see one on the cover that is composed of bowtie quilt blocks----the background looks to be shirting and the bow tie portions from tie material. I just love it, and only wish I still had my Dad's ties, but he's been dead since the 60s...I'd love one of these. There are also log cabin quilts, pillows, etc made with men's ties exclusively...and lots of other things. The book gives instructions on how to 'deal' with tie material...when to wash, when to cut, how to take apart, etc, plus all the ideas for using the ties when you're done.

Memory quilt ideas for baby shower

I hosted a baby shower for my sister a couple of years ago. As one of the shower activities, I wanted to make a quilt for the baby. I gave each guest a piece of fabric. Solid yellow. 8.5" square. Gave them fabric markers and had them write a message on there for the baby, to be made into a quilt. Told them to leave 1" margin all the way around. Had them sign their names, as the baby would know them. Made that into a quilt that was presented at the baby's christening a few months later. Since we didn't know if it would be a boy or girl, I used homespun plaids for the sashing, and small florals for the cornerstones. It was a boy, and his parents love plaid, so that was a good guess. The corner blocks served as the labels. In one corner, I put the baby's name, birth date, time & weight. Another corner, the date of the shower. Another corner, date of the christening. Last corner was my own block for the saying I wanted to write. And I put care instructions on the back, in case the quilt ever ends up in a dorm room. My sister told me that they plan to hang the quilt on the wall. I need to add a hanging sleeve. My sister does not sew much.

They are going to be induced tomorrow morning, so the donation of these 44 wonderful quilts will be made this weekend. Baby James' brother Aaron Thomas Robinson will be born tomorrow hopefully. I will keep you guys informed.

Donna, you did a great job designing the memorial quilt. I think the shadows really add so much to a tee shirt quilt. I'm sure your friend will cherish the quilt made in memory of his husband. How kind of you.

That is beautiful. You know all the love that went into making this quilt for you. Quilted so lovingly. I make these for my family and it is a labor of love. You are so blest with those that love you. In today's time , I especially love reading stories of folks showing love.

She is Tom's brother's wife.

This is also what she embroidered on the back. I probably didn't need to block my name as some of you know it anyway :-)

It's extremely well made, nice and heavy. It's on the back of my couch.

Brings back so many memories of organizing, pulling off a memory quilt for my parents 25th wedding anniversary. We were just teenagers and never did much embroidery or sewing but how hard could it be we thought....and what memories does one include in a gift--their memories but we chose!?!?! We went on to create quilts for all our weddings--the joining of two families, blocks donated from each side...life used to allow for the time for such things. One of your friends fancy quilting machines would have topped all our quilts off nicely but alas ours were not so blessed. Enjoy!!
