There's not much you can do if on a moratorium on buying new furniture, what you have is probably the best solution. The existing sofas are critically flawed as they are low-height Chesterfields in a room with soaring ceilings and a massive window. There are ways to work the decorating scheme into that room, but in my opinion you have a blank slate and nothing you currently have in the room will work.

Also the TV is in a horrible spot over the fireplace. It looks bad there, and this is not a media room, or at least it wasn't designed originally as one. That would be much better on the wall to the left of the fireplace in conjunction with an entertainment wall piece.

My suggestion would be to just make it comfortable for now and when you have the financial resources to do so there are ways to make that room work very well with new furnishings that compliment the space. Good luck

Thanks so much for the feedback! The “coffee table” that is sitting there now is really just a chest so we have a place to put things until I find what I want!

For a carpet, do you think blue and white would be good? Again, I’m awful at decorating haha.

i would increase the formality of the space. i agree with The Keeping Room that the TV needs to be moved to the left of the fireplace, or moved to another room that could be a media room if you have one. I do think the chesterfield sofa could work, though if you play up the "old world" aesthetic - think cigar and cognac lounge. but that all depends on how much you're wanting to invest in new furniture.

i am not sure if it's a result of the fisheye effect of your camera, but it looks like a very large room - perhaps big enough to separate into 2 separate areas: a sitting area with club chairs by the fireplace, and a more comfortable area for the couch by the stairs to watch tv. Otherwise i suggest spreading things out, with a couch perpendicular to the fireplace with a couple club chairs opposite it, and a coffee table centered - the entire configuration centered on the fireplace.

maybe also consider getting some tall millwork in there for books, decorations, etc to bring the compliment the scale of the room

Thank you for the pictures. It helps a lot when folks give us a panoramic view of a room. This room has such wonderful light in it. In the windows, wow, are really great! What you have in that room is a great start. The couches look very comfortable in the trunk is wonderful. So here are a couple of suggestions; move the large couch so that it is facing the fireplace and the TV. Then angle the smaller couch off of the larger one, in other words just move the L shape you already have to the left within the room.
Coffee tables: Square one the couches and on both ends
Bookshelves: on the large wall to the left of the fireplace. They can serve as a place to put toys, games, DVDs and so on.
Long bench seat under the windows
Couch tables behind each couch
Wood storage: wooden crates work well. That’s what I use for my kindling and paper. I also use a Circular metal wood bin.
Stair wall: This is a great place for a wall collage.
Lighting: as much as you can throughout the room.
You may want to check out the program called fixer-upper with Chip and Joanne Gaines she has some great ideas that would work well in this room.

It is easier to do a layout on the floor but the carboard on the wall is good too as long as you use the type of tape that doesn't pull the paint off. Hope you have a lot of fun decorating your new house. BTW Congratulations on your new house. It looks like it is a beautiful home. It looks like it is snowy and cold where you are. Nice job. Yes, Kacie that it much better. What do you think about this layout. It will give you a direct view of the TV and a way in and out of the seating and kitchen area. I have some more pics to come for the rest of the room. Please know that these are only suggestions. It is important to me that you and your husband are happy with the results. Hello Kacie. What do you think? Does this layout work for you? Did you try it? It gives you a great view of the tv and out of that amazing window. I know that the furniture isn't all of what you have so the rest is just food for thought. For instance the couch tables may not work. Also the bench seat under the window has storage in it as does the bookshelf unit and a toy box under the thin table against the stairs.
