I think the weak link was in in trying to make a sales platform like Wayfair. Everything I saw said that it was done very poorly. That and web design.

The Houzz site and what it's trying to do to make money has never impressed me as an approach with great potential. I'd be surprised if it's even a medium term survivor.

Some enterprising souls should act proactively to investigate and set up the same capabilities on an different site or platform so that this "community" can continue communicating.

Any volunteers?

I had no idea it was worth 4 billion dollars. It is very unfortunate for those who have been terminated. Hopefully some of the forums tech team survived and they won't be shutting down all of the forums.

I'm sorry for those getting laid off. But Houzz didn't have a very good business model in that they were so non responsive to their base customer's needs. This latest 'Best Answer' button is a prime example of this. It certainly wasn't requested as far as any of us can determine, and is such a useless item to incorporate when other improvements are needed or desired.

There's a lot of wishful thinking, hyperbole, and excessive valuations in the tech world so I wouldn't put too much focus on the $4 B number. The folks that supply the money for these companies to operate unprofitably (the venture capitalists) invest lots of money (some say too much) in dozens and dozens of different places and hope on balances the winners pay for the losers and leave a net profit for their risky investing. It doesn't always happen.

Anyone have any idea where we might find another Spike to provide a secure tie base to our beloved railroad track?

Way back when I first discovered this site, I was just looking for information on Florida gardening. There was so much good info. and it took me a few years to even join in. Then I realized that there were other forums such as cooking, quilting that I was interested in, too. But when Houzz stepped in there seemed to be a lot of people dropping off and the emphasis on trying to get people to go to the sales end of the site made the it not so special anymore. The quilting forum is so sparse now, and it used to be very active. I wouldn't be surprised if they closed this part of it down completely. So enjoy posting while you can.

I have always thought we should at least set up a Reddit sub as a landing spot should this place go poof without warning. If people are interested I would be happy to secure r/GWKitchenTable. People could create Reddit accounts with their KT moniker included. I know it's not a perfect solution, but may be worth a try since I have little faith Houzz is long for this world without being supported by massive infusions of VC cash.

Reddit is a great idea. I've been on that platform for years, so it's familiar to me. It's very easy to use, as well - and anonymous. Well, as anonymous as any Internet site.

If you don't have a Reddit account, obtaining one is easy at Reddit.com. Try to be sure you use you KT moniker with your new account. I will need to create a new GW Zalco account myself. In the meantime I hijacked one of my children's Reddit accounts to create the sub since new members may not create subReddits.

For those who are new to Reddit, I highly recommend r/Aww for adorable pictures and gifs of pets. A major stress reliever :-)

I've joined dozens of subreddits, but I really like r/dashcam to watch some realllly poor driving. haha

I have been enjoying pictures and stories on reddit for years but never joined. I also enjoy Imgur, there's a lot of shared content from reddit, I joined it some time ago. They are both a good way to spend time and often with a smile or laugh.

Does anyone else see "Home & Garden Discussions" at the top of this board, instead of "The Kitchen Table " ?

I tried to start a separate thread about this, but I couldn't find either of those boards to post it to.

Same for a lot of the forums. I have most that I often visit bookmarked and nearly all just say that generic heading. Yuck.

It shows as 'Kitchen Table' for me. All the old GW forums show up under their correct titling for me. But I only access the site though GardenWeb, never Houzz.

When I click on it, it brings me directly to the KT. If you copy it and paste it into a new browser, it should bring up the KT. Then you can save it as the correct bookmark.

woodrose, I have the KT bookmarked, and not sure if you know, but you can bookmark the sites you visit within GardenWeb. Like mine look like this. So I initially come to the KT, then I can go to any of the other forums as well.
