I do think the feature is getting lost in the white paint, especially with such a pretty play of light and shadow that you get from the light fixture.

If it were me*, I'd go at least a shade or two darker on the vertical planes, in a matte finish. I'd also replace the trim and paint it a glossier, brighter white (or a cooler one if you're already using bright white.)

If you're wanting the lower contrast of an all-white ceiling, you might still try the different finishes. I do think that the difference between a matte on the vertical planes and a satin on the horizontal, with the trim in a gloss would give it more definition while letting you maintain the single color.

You're not getting any of the detail with the trim painted over in the same color as the rest of the ceiling. In fact, I think it's actually blending away the contrast even more. You might actually get a lot of mileage out using an artist's angled brush to cut in a line a shade darker right under the trim, and maybe blended into the grooves on the surface. Sleep on it before you scrutinize it. If it doesn't work, it would be easy to paint over.

* actually, if it were me I'd probably paint in deep teal and bright orange because I'm that person, but I can pretend to be normal and will concede that neutrals are more elegant :-)

This would have been the right place to add gold leaf to complement your fancy chandelier. Just on the top flat ceiling. Not on the step down.

@Jennifer Carter Thank you for your comment. It may be hard to tell in the picture, but the trim is semi gloss and the rest is ceiling flat. I will take a better picture this evening.

@Susan Davis Thank you. It has grown on me now that the second coat is done. I think like you said, it will be more clear what needs to be done once all the paint is done.

@BeverlyFLADeziner Thank you for your comments. I think your idea is gorgeous. I am unsure that it would work with the greys though. Also, I failed to mention in my original post, but I do think I am changing out the chandelier. I love it, but, it doesn't quite go with the farmhouse look I am doing. Our last house was browns with lots of gold and I am just wanting to switch it up and am enjoying the brighter look of the greys and whites.

I have a MCM ranch with 8' ceilings, so little opportunity to use the ceiling as a 5th wall, but with a tray ceiling you have so much opportunity to make it special. I don't think I could leave it all white. It would be calling to me day and night until I added detail of some type.

Sorry I’m a vote for all white, it was far to stripey before.

Here is is everything painted. We do still need to do a few touch ups on the ceiling and are going to freshen the trim with a new coat of paint,but in the same color it is now I think... which is the same as the ceiling but semigloss. There is always the option of adding something to the ceiling later but I don’t think it will be stripes like before.

Looks great, the chandelier is the start now.

We are probably changing the chandelier... we like it but it doesn’t seem to go as well with the farmhouse theme. We aren’t doing full on farmhouse, But we are doing greys and whites and kitchen will be white cabinets with white quartz with some small grey veins ( think lg muse). Probably a medium to light brown wood floor. Suggestions welcome but this is the style I’m looking for.
