a question about buying patio umbrella
Comments (13)I haven't used the tilt feature very often but my umbrella is in a table so there isn't much need to tilt it. But if it were standalone then I think it would be more useful. My umbrella has a powder coated metal pole so I don't have to worry about rust, etc. I don't know if a wood pole would be prone to cracking but that's what I would worry about. I'm on my 2nd umbrella and here's what I learned from the first one. Of all the things to consider I never thought about the fabric. Unfortunately that's what ended up biting me in the end. Unless it's Sunbrella or something just like it the color is going to fade badly in the sun. I noticed a neighbor's awning faded from a lovely eggplant shade of purple to lilac. Not pretty. My first umbrella was a very colorful floral but after only a couple seasons under the hot California sun the colors were gone with only an imprint left in a most unattractive pukey yellow. How red and green can fade out to muddy mustard is a mystery to me. But it was so ugly I couldn't stand looking at it, even if the mechanics were still in good working order. I replaced it with a new umbrella. This time my #1 criteria was that it be made with SUNBRELLA fabric. It's been about 4 years now and the blue is still the same beautiful shade of sky blue it was when I bought it. The brand is called "Treasure Garden". I bought it at a patio store, can't remember how much I paid for it though. I couldn't be happier with the quality. Oh, the split fabric is very good to have if the umbrella is left open in windy weather. Both my umbrellas had the crank which I like....See MoreAppreciate your input on patio
Comments (19)Thank you all for your comments and suggestions!! I was thrilled this morning to see so many responses!! Lake Erie is actually my back yard, about a quarter of a mile away, but unfortunetly can't see if because of the wooded property behind me. I know it's there though!!! kswl, you didn't offend me. I appreciate everyone's thoughts. I had hoped since I live so close to the lake that I could make the nautical work because it added the color I thought the space needed. Squirelhaven, I agree that the screen needed to come up or something needed to be on top of it. I had a flag draped across the area above last year(double sided tape!), but knew that introducing Americana with what I all ready had wasn't right. Also, thanks for adding the cat! I have five rescues in the house that would love to garden with me, but I don't like to take a chance since the road is so close. They can only watch from the slider. Cooperbailey, I live in zone 5 so my growing season is so short. I try to cram everything in three short months. The building you see in the background is our old garage before we built one onto the house. I do have a smaller grapevine star that I will try. Thanks! The nautical things came to be in my quest for trying to add some color and fun. I can see where it could be too much. I added the oars so the bland posts would have some excitiment. The buoys just kinda followed and I see where it is possibly too much. The bakers rack is hard to put flowers on because it doesn't get much light there. That space was hard for me to do, too, but I will work on more color there. My camera card is full so if I can figure out how to delete some pics I will add a shot of the bakers rack. I can't move the palm any closer or behind my chair because the chairs swivel and recline. I was thinking of getting a large talavera sun and hanging it in the space between the shutters and the palm. Shhhh, don't tell my husband!! I have always liked hanging ferns on a porch and I have two at both ends, but didnt' do the middle because we have eagles flying over the lake and my husband loves to see all glimpses of them if possible. Nothing can block his view!! Luckygal, paintchips and texashottie, natal, dgmarie, thanks for your ideas and comments about my garden. It is good to have fresh eyes look at a space that I have been dealing with for some time. We have never had a patio or a place to relax before and I am in overdrive to make it nice. I appreciate your ideas and thoughts! Thanks again for all the responses. You have given me some good ideas and compliments and I appreciate all of them. If you have any more thoughts that could help me pull this area together, please let me know. Zoe...See MoreSuggestions on rectangular patio table umbrella
Comments (6)Thanks all. I was really hoping for some real life experiences on the suggestions though, as I did a dearch but it didn't really help much (except for maybe what NOT to buy). busybee, I looked up frontgate and they did indeed have a rectangular one, for 800.00! Lil much for me, but thank you anyway! :) From past reviews on PB stuff, I will not purchase from them. Love their stuff as far as it's mostly pretty attractive, but they don't get great reviews. justterrilyn, I did run across that umbrella in searching, but the material sounds thin and I think (if I am remembering correctly) that was a complaint of some. Again, thanks for trying....See MoreNeed inputs on Landscape plan for back yard
Comments (8)Thanks for the questions. We like the size of our current patio for a seating group. We want two more areas of patio. One for dining which will need to accommodate a 8' circle to account for current table and chairs. we would like an additional lounge area uncovered that would have room for a portable fire bowl. Location of grill is good point. My husband likes that the grill is currently under cover, so an umbrella over the grill and possibly an umbrella over the table could be desired for additional cover, but nothing more permanent than that is needed. 350-400 SQ feet is what I am currently thinking but we might be able to scale back to 300. Kids are currently 4 and 8. Right now we are thinking a 5' tall climbing dome, or some other portable play structure. We would also consider a shed that could be used as an art shed or hangout for when kids are older or gone. Fencing is a concern. Deer is a problem and we would like to add a gate to the back fence as there is trail access. One side fence is ours and the other is not. We need to talk to neighbors before deciding on type of fence. Privacy currently is not an issue, but would be nice if we could swing it. a tall semi open deer fence is something we are considering. In the idea of simplifying, if the new patio we're all on level would it be easier to start with a step down from the existing patio and then level to grass, or level from patio and then a step down to grass....See MoreBecky
