Suggestions on rectangular patio table umbrella

Ours finally bit the dust, or rather, the pole did. The cover was still going strong, though it wasn't quite as pretty since the sun had bleached it and the birds had bombed it. lol

We can't remember how many years we've had it, but the pole started messing up at the point where it can be tilted several years ago. And the thing is, we rarely used that feature. So, we are wanting to hopefully get one that will hold up a bit better. Does anyone have any good suggestions? I want one that can be set so the pole doesn't twirl. And, is metal better than wood for the pole? Ours was metal.

Budget? Well this one was 300ish but I'd rather pay less obviously.

we currently have a couple of frontgate umbrellas which I'm very happy with... we have round, but they used to make square/rectangular too. our poles are metal. they usually have some decent end of season sales... somewhat pricey otherwise.

I saw two things in online shopping, either they were $70ish or less and had low ratings, or were in the $300 range and better rated. Here's one for $200 that's rated decently.

Bring the lazy susan to the store and try sitting over the umbrella hole if they have a display - can't tell from pics whether the glass has a plastic rim to protect it from chipping, it might be easy to remove or it might not, the LS might not sit flat on it. I'd tend to go for a glass-topped table without a hole if you can find one.

I've browsed most web sites listed on Google, including Amazon. Most umbrellas are 6' and wider. I was recently at Walmart and they had a table/chairs/umbrella set for $99. The umbrella is just the right size, only a bright red. If I don't find anything I might just have to buy the set and sell or give away the tables/chairs. I suppose the thing to do would be to buy a 6' diameter and bring it home to see just how it looks, perhaps it wouldn't be all that awkward. Funny how one foot can make a difference tho. Thanks.

What's your budget? I've found there's two ways to go with umbrellas 1) get a really expensive one that seems to be very hardy and then a bad storm trashes it 2) go with a quality somewhat expensive one and replace the fabric part every year or even the total umbrella if you forget to drop it when snow is coming. :-) There are however, commercial grade stands and umbrellas that stand up to the elements well but they can get quite pricey. Here is one on sale for $179, was $699 on patio shoppers . Com . They have a zillion colors to choose from. The table stand is an extra $199. I have no experience with this umbrella though. I bought a smaller half umbrella commercial grade with stand and sunbrella fabric that weighs a ton. That was on sale for $375 so I'm not sure if you can get good quality for much less. This one has decent reviews.

Thanks all. I was really hoping for some real life experiences on the suggestions though, as I did a dearch but it didn't really help much (except for maybe what NOT to buy).

busybee, I looked up frontgate and they did indeed have a rectangular one, for 800.00! Lil much for me, but thank you anyway! :)

From past reviews on PB stuff, I will not purchase from them. Love their stuff as far as it's mostly pretty attractive, but they don't get great reviews.

justterrilyn, I did run across that umbrella in searching, but the material sounds thin and I think (if I am remembering correctly) that was a complaint of some.

can you make do with a 9' round?? won't shade everyone at the table at all times, but I know with our round table, that's hard to do anyway. I paid at least 1/2 price for ours... I think probably around 200 for each- it was 3-4 years ago...

Well, I can't say a round would work very well, for me anyway. I sit on the end a lot, (my favorite perch) so I definitely need a rectangular one. I ended up ordering one on Amazon (same brand as what I had) for 170 in desperation cuz I need one now. If nothing else it will (hopefully) buy me some time to research more. Thanks again bb3.

You would think with all the patios all over the world, many with rectangular tables, there would be an over abundance of these things....
