My DH gave me this from a wood web site.... I must give them and him all the credit. From contributor L: Here is my solution to the "wasted space" in the corner issue - forget about it! Here is why: Suppose you just make that space in the corner "dead." Now, compare that to a lazy susan - first I have to take away 12" of good, usable, direct access cabinetry from each side. Accounting for 2" fillers, that is a loss of 10" on each face, or 20" total. 20" times the interior depth of 23" is 460 sq.in. So that is a net loss of 3.19 sq.ft. of horizontal interior surface. Then I put a 32" pie-cut susan in there and gain back 603 sq.in* - a net gain of only 143 sq.in. or 1 sq.ft. Since you have 2 levels, that is a net gain of 2 sq.ft. so far - and then you lose 20"** of top drawers, since most of us leave the top drawers out to improve access to the lazy susan. That is an additional net loss of 20"x 22"= 440 sq.in. or 3 sq.ft. So, to sum it up, with a lazy susan you loose 1 sq.ft. of storage space compared to a dead corner. Plus you just spent a bunch of the customer's money for that lazy susan. from woodweb I ditched the susans and put in 2 drawer banks. on the opposing "corner" we put a 15" cab with door/ drawer on top, a shelf in the "dreaded dead spot" to store the turkey pan, huge gumbo pot and such. I could put in "a pull out something" or other just as long as I could get to the seasonal stuff tucked back there. Makes it much more usable.

The only concern I think you might have is the pull out hitting the knob on the door of your blind corner, depending on the configuration. I have a 3 inch space between my blind corner and range, and couldn't seem to figure out how to fit anything in that space without hitting the knob! I do have a 6 inch pull out on the other side of my range that houses my spices and I love having that organized space.

You are on a mission to stamp out under used space. I think that is admirable. However, I had my kitchen at MoccasinLanding with such a corner chopped out. I didn't do it, that happened to be where the heater closet was in the hall, and thus not in the kitchen at all. It eliminated the problem of corner cabinet totally. However, it meant what would have been countertop was missing from my kitchen. They are also making different corner cabinets these days, with drawers that pull out on the diagonal. Also, you might consider that corner spot a good place to put a short fat water heater, or a dehumidifier, provided you can access them for servicing or replacement. In my new kitchen plan, I eliminated every situation which might have called for a corner cabinet. NO CORNERS. I have essentially a galley style kitchen. The intersecting cabinets face opposite directions, when they "T" up. Or maybe it is "I" up which has a bar top and bottom. The vertical is my cooking side. The top bar of the T is my baking side and such as that, and the bottom bar of the T (turn it upside down) is just an "L" and the foot is my 42" high 2-stool eating bar attached to the other end of my cooking side. The other side of the kitchen runs 29 feet, counting the dining room window seat flanked by cabs, the sink run of 8 feet, and the 10 foot run including the fridge, small appliance cab, under counter fridge, pantry, laundry hamper, and stacking washer dryer on the end. I'm leaving a few extra inches for the laundry unit, since they seem to think giant washer/dryers are the equivalent of a BMW in the driveway. My w/d is right there in the kitchen, at the end of the line of course, but that is what they do in Europe and I see no need for a separate room for this necessary appliance. What I put elsewhere was the bulk storage of T-paper, P-towels, vacuum, .....whatever, it now has a real sort of "broom closet" which will also have a couple of shelves for the electronics to remain hidden.....the TV will be outside the wall of the closet, and connected through a small port where my wires are hidden. So consider you might find a way to build in a cedar closet or cedar chest. Put a dog crate inside. Where the corner has an exterior wall, install an outdoor access panel so you might put firewood there. Also, I've seen one of those dumb waiters like at restaurants where the plates loaded on the base go down with more weight, up with less weight. Another thing I've seen was the corner had a lid and the trash could go into the slots and get covered. However, I do not much like that, since it would be totally gross and nasty in no time. But, perhaps recycling is an option for the corners. IF you can access it somewhere besides in the corner of the kitchen. Just thought I'd put my 2 cents into the game. Quite a challenge. Maybe someone else will confound us all with a perfect solution to the dead corner issue.

Lisa - two KD people that I have spoken to said that the voided corner does not provide wider drawers on either side. What am I missing? Nothing as far as I can tell because what they are telling you makes no sense to me at all. If you don't give up 12" of linear space to a Susan, you gain 9" of drawer width (3" goes to spacer at corner). I considered adding a BCC to my sink corner (didn't have space on sink side to do corner Susan) but opted not to because a) it wasn't the right kind of storage for that corner and b) a drawer base was cheaper storage than a BCC. Here's my corner. Drawers & trash pull-outs open. If I had done a BCC, I would have lost the bank of drawers on the right. If I'd had room for a corner Susan, I would have lost 27" of much needed drawer storage. The few items that I would have been able to store in a BCC (ditto for a corner Susan) ended up in a a single drawer in a much roomier cab next to my wall oven. I use the items in the drawers in my prep zone much more regularly than the items I use in the drawer by my oven. A few extra steps now and then is a much better option than extra steps several times a day, IMO. Look at the whole picture when it comes to storage. What you decide for one area affects storage in another. It's a domino effect, IME.
