what new roses have you recently obtained?
Comments (48)Mori, are you specifically looking for a yellow hybrid tea? If you're worried about wintering them HTs will be the most tender and suffer the most die back probably. You might want to look at some floribundas or shrubs instead. They tend to be hardier. Julia Child is one I know is hardy but there is also a new one out called Sparkle & Shine, although I don't know about it's hardiness yet....See MoreWhat have you done new to your gadens recently?
Comments (3)Recently I: - Had my grandchildren choose and plant their own plants in our garden - children do make excellent choices (like Helichrysum and Brachycome)! My almost six-year-old granddaughter pouted when I told her we had to bring her home and wouldn't have time to plant any more plants. Sounds like me! - Planted lots of new (to me) variegated plants (e.g., Carex 'Beatlemania', variegated daylily and spotted Heuchera) with the goal of lightening the mood of the garden. - Acquired lots more ornamental grasses, after getting hooked on them last year. - Started consciously thinking more of designing with color, and being bolder with it. - Realized that, with a nice variety of plants in place, and with something blooming at any given time in the growing season, I can splurge by getting lots of each of a few plants that I love. The backdrop is in place now, about seven years after the start of my current garden. Wishing you a belated happy birthday, Wendy...See MoreWhat have you cooked recently from your garden?
Comments (5)Tomatoes, tomatoes, and more tomatoes! The Cherokee Purple taste awfully good straight up, ditto to the yellow/red mixed color ones. Supposedly called Mr. Stripey, but not really striped and look just like heirloom ones I have grown previously that were called something else. Have made a lot of tomato salads, some including cucumbers from an acquaintance's garden, some with feta cheese, most with black raspberry vinegar that we flavored outselves. Mmmm! Hubby has canned 13 quarts of spaghetti sauce so far, all ingredients organic and homegrown except for the salt: tomatoes, onions, garlic, basil, oregano, and rosemary. Have been making lots of pasta and stir fry dishes including our beans, bell peppers, and tomatoes. Have been eating our wax beans for some time, the lettuce and arugula is all gone to seed now. Oh, eggplant, got some great eggplants growing this year and have been breading and frying slices (yum!), also putting it into stir fries. Have had a good garlic harvest for the first time ever (finally did everything right) and have noticed that really fresh garlic is stronger. I am completely safe from vampires. We almost never peel tomatoes. There is a big argument in the harvest forum about that, most people think it is so important to peel them before canning but we see no point in wasting our time and energy. Comments (40)I'll probably get rocks thrown at me for admitting to using a box mix....BUT...I have struggled with a banana bread recipe that I am really happy with for quite some time. My neighbor makes really good banana bread...I love it. Very basic recipe but I can not seem to duplicate it. Mine just doesn't come out the same. She used to bring me some when she'd bake but we're not friends anymore SO NO MORE OF HER GOOD BANANA BREAD FOR ME!! lol Anyways...I had 2 overripe bananas at home so I decided to try the Chiquita brand box mix for banana bread...2 bananas water and an egg.....well what do you know....some pretty good banana bread for out of box!! There's one piece left :-)...See More- 5 years ago
