She shed build for DW
I retired last August and DW retired in October, during that time frame we also downsized from 3000 sqft (4 br, 2 bath) to 1300 sqft (2 br, 2 bath) single story, no basement, retirement palace.
DW is very crafty and she used the smallest bedroom of our previous home as her craft room. Unfortunately with only two bedrooms in this house there was no place for all her crafts.
Being a reasonably attentive and somewhat handy-to-keep-around husband, I suggested that I could build her a 4-season she shed for her craft work, she liked that idea and last October I started on the project.
Since we live in northwest wisconsin, there is a limit as to how much I was going to get done working through the winter on the project, but i did finish the inside a few weeks ago and she is now moved it and enjoying her new space. Along the way she suggested that I might i share something it on THS since so many people are stuck at home and perhaps people might enjoy and perhaps share their own similar experiences. Comments (33)Wow, I didn't expect this thread to still be alive. We no longer own the acreage or the lovely little shed, but I still see it when I drive by, and it looks to be holding up well. Chuck, the beams were just rough milled pine 6x6 from a local mill, untreated except for stain application after. The skids that the floor of the shed were built on were the only treated wood used as they were contacting the ground. The insulation quality in this particular shed is slim to none, as the walls are just 6" thick firewood chunks and mortar. Some of the wood shrank a bit as it should have been stacked once chopped to size and let dry for a bout a year. So this shed definitely is not insulated. A lot of cordwood builds use longer lengths of firewood and only apply mortar on the inside and outside edge of the walls like chinking, they infill the middle with sawdust. These style of builds have great insulating properties. Thanks for the questions. Comments (3)Hi @ my Annabel. I too am unclear about the shed meaning here. Do you wish it to be a normal garden shed that can be used as a cover for the harsh sun? Or do you intend to ask about sheds that can be alternatively used as a storage? Ideally people make use of garden shed as a storage for shelves and hooks and other gardening equipments. In case you have a bigger space for building the shed, you can alternatively use one as an outhouse for your convenience. Comments (8)I love that the shed is different but still complimentary with the house. It's a perfect way to tie it in but also set it apart. Flower box and garage door paint will make a big difference! I would either go dark on the garage door to match the flower box + main front door or I would paint it to match the rest of the shed. It's such a sweet little backyard building :)...See More

Yep, it will have a small porch as well as a small deck. A few construction photos, current today.
The clerestory windows will still be there when it's done, lighting a small attic space.

SInce I originally posted, and as I was finishing the outside of the shed, I just wasn't happy with the way it looked. It felt naked for lack of a better word; kind of out-of-balance like something was missing.
After a few seconds of deep deliberation and careful consideration (and a big dose of what-the-heck) I decided to add a screen porch rather than just a flat deck on the east side. I think it worked.

I originally planned a flat deck on the left side, but decided to add the screen room for better balance and much more useable space.
The windows were all salvage so not the same color. DW suggested matching trim to window rather than window to trim and we both liked the result. This side and the back are dark trim while the front is white trim.
Finally finished (for now). And while not specific to the shed, I will be adding a ground level deck to the west (right) side connecting the shed and the house.oberon476

West deck being installed...going to move hot tub there in the spring.
porch light installed and west deck connecting to the house (no steps house to shed).
electric candles in the windows for Christmas.
no real fire allowed in she shed!

It will be independent of the shed, located right about where I am standing to take this picture.

Sounds like a really great idea for a tea house on the creek.
I also built raised garden beds and tossed cattle/hog wire over the top for the plants to climb, but also will work for green house in the spring.
We live next to a marsh, so mosquitoes can get crazy bad, that's part of why I built the screen room. And as an aside it works great!
These pictures are from early spring when just finished (more or less) construction, so a big mess, but I will do an update on this and deck/pergola addition shortly.thank you for great comments from everyone!!
