Comments (23)Diana A final word: A House is not a Home. That is a Rule of English, not a statement of sentiment. House is a verb, home is a noun. House and Home are Not Synonymous. "The Dept of Houseland Security warns of an attack on American House." "He went house." "House" is an Action taken upon a diverse collection of organic and inorganic materials to provide shelter, home, kennel, stable, nest for a resident thereof. It is structure, structuring of home. In a horticultural sense, "Soil" is an Action taken up the diverse collection of materials both organic and inorganic. It is structure, structuring of dirt. Soil is the verb. Dirt is the noun. Soil and Dirt are Not Synonymous. That is the simplest explanation as all English words must follow the Rules. You may say anything you like but know the rules. I use "stuff" (verb) as a noun as in "my stuff" or "that stuff" but a competent editor would never allow and, to my knowledge, never has allowed "stuff (noun)" to be published except as quote or dialect. However I will add: Murdering the Queen' English is the National Sport and favorite pastime of the Brit's while Americans, myself included, are hell-bent on proving that Warren G. Harding was not the only one who could write a simple declarative sentence with seven grammatical errors. Comments (16)Sorry am late getting back. We had our LR carpet (yes, carpet) and furniture cleaned today and only now am I able to access the computer. Anyway, I googled also, for "mid twentieth century russian painting" and there was quite a bit from the 19th century on. There is some beautiful work, but many of the artists lived in Europe and you could see the French influence in particular. So your picture remains a mystery. I hope that you do get your courage up and talk to someone knowledgeable about Russian work. I never thought about artists being embarrassed that their work might end up at Good Will! It makes sense, though. DH and I did see Where in the H*11 is Jackson Pollack? and loved it. We cheered on the owner from the beginning. I found Thomas Hoving, ex-director of the Met, to be thoroughly obnoxious, rude, classist, and insulting. That's what so nice about Antiques Roadshow. They explain the importance of provenance very well, but also listen to everyone's story seriously. Interesting how works of art inspire different "readings". I see that painting as tragic. Nicholas and his wife were not especially corrupt or cruel, they were stupid and uninterested in their people. They did not deserve their fate IMO, particularly considering what followed them. Exile - yes, savage execution - no. So if I look at the "Bierstadt aspect" of the picture, I see a very dark side of nature obscuring its light beauty. The force that is coming is punishing. Have you (or anyone else here) ever watched the fine BBC series, The Private Life of a Masterpiece? On each program, three or four "masterpieces" of painting or sculpture are examined, with beautiful music and photography accompanying the experts' explanations. It's a exceptional series, enjoyable for anyone who's ever looked twice at any painting. Even DH, who is not an art person, was captivated. Rent it from Netflix or buy it on Amazon. To complete this ramble: There's a neat scene in an episode of Law&Order: Criminal Intent. Goren and Eames are in a gallery, looking at a Monet (fake). Goren says "Too pretty." Eames says "Yes, but I could hang it on my wall." Goren replies "But I don't want to hang it. I want to think about it." In a later episode, looking at an un-pretty picture done in rusted metal (a clue to the killer), Eames says "Is this some of that art that you want to think about?" and Goren just grins. So I'm going to think about your picture, maybe hang the printout in our laundry room. Thanks for sharing it!...See MoreMoro blood orange planted 1/8/2017
Comments (58)Annual update on my Moro Blood Orange. For some reason last year I posted it had only been in ground for 2 years but in fact I planted this tree in January 2017 so it’s actually been in ground for 4 years this year. It’s bearing a lot of fruit this season, maybe 50-60 fruit in clusters. I’ve been pulling one fruit every couple weeks to taste them, they're getting progressively sweeter as the season goes on. I’ll take a pic of one of the fruit cut open the next time I pull one to taste test, but here is an overall photo of the tree holding fruit. Sideways pic of one of the clusters of fruit Evan...See MoreThe Coronavirus Explained & What You Should Do (Video)
Comments (8)I agree the doom and gloom has gotten out of control. Between 40-70% of us will get this virus, ~20% will require hospitalization and ~5% will require ventilators. This is a big problem but the only reason is is an ENORMOUS problem is because if we all get sick at once, some otherwise healthy and not even that old people will not be able to receive care because we dont have enough ventilators. Otherwise healthy, active people being told they cannot have medical care to keep them alive is a recipe for civil unrest (which is such a civilized euphemism for havoc, and rightfully so.) We can reduce the number of people who get sick all at once in one spot. Because we don't have enough tests and masks we have to do it with blunt force .... stay home. That causes economic havoc, but rates are soooo low and our TSY bonds are still a safe haven, so it will be cheap for us to borrow like mad to solve the financial impact. We will come out of this. This is not the apocalypse. Oh and vote in November like your life and the life of your loved ones depends on it....See MoreUser
