Gas Fireplace/Mantle design help
I need design help on the wall with my gas fireplace. I want to have a floating wood mantle/shelf and TV will be on wall above. I am concerned as to why the trim guy put a baseboard along the bottom. (I will be talking to the builder today about this). It does not have extended hearth (not sure if that's even the right word), I have engineered hardwood for flooring.
I'm not sure what would look best around the fire place. Stone? Tile? If so, all the way to wall edge? of just a smaller band around the fireplace? Should I have the baseboard removed?
Many pictures I've seen with a floating mantle have shiplap or stone/brick on the whole wall. At this point, that's probably not an option to put something on the whole wall. I know many of you don't care for TV's above the fireplace. But it's where it's going to be located so please kindly refrain from judgement/negative comments on that.
I would be appreciative of design guidance for fireplace surround and mantle. Thank you so much!

Comments (5)I know you said that you aren't changing the carpet, but might you consider it? Only because, I'm assuming that is a gas fireplace, there is no need for a large tile area in front. You can go for a narrow hearth or no hearth. If you wanted to do that, unless you have a large scrap or can match it, you're stuck with the large hearth. I like the idea of doing built-ins. As they would be asymmetrical anyway due to window placement, you may just want to build in on the right to accommodate TV and components and leave the left side as is. Not that I'm suggesting this style, but just to illustrate a tv next to fireplace built in, one side only. Something like this might work for you, but without the overmantel. Note that this tile surround is very similar to your hearth tile. If you like that look, you could get more tile, perhaps and then tie it together that way. Comments (33)Jlc--thanks! I'm slowly warming to the idea of maybe tile just around the firebox. And I agree that a darker tile/stone would be best. Slate would look nice and not compete with the Carrara counters. I'd have to see some sort of photoshop or mockup to be able to tell. Mtn--I'm not sure I'd like the balance of dark charcoal top with white bottom. I think it emphasizes my low ceilings. Robo--different on both sides is a viable option I hadn't considered. I agree with you about the feeling of the fireplace. I had not planned hearths when we reno'd. The fireplace area you see used to be a gigantic brick mass of two offset fireplaces as part of the wall that separated the two sides of the house, complete with massive ugly hearth on one side. I was rebelling against that set up when I re-designed the house and moved rooms around. I wanted a sleeker look. At this point, there's not enough floor space on the living room side for hearth. On the family room side where you see little DD's art table, there's enough space. I'm hoping that when we are finally able to buy new furniture for the family and living rooms that we can add some sort of little seating by the FR fireplace. Athomeinva--thanks. The fabric is not my style at all. It's hard to see, but there's a metallic thread running through the fabric. And it's showing its 25+ years of wear. Although the settee itself is much too ornate for my taste, I'm never going to part with it, and I don't currently have space to put it anywhere else in my house. It's a very special piece to me. Comments (7)Since it appears that you have a raised hearth, I'll tell you a trick that will help you lower your TV. Reframe the wall so the firebox sits on the floor and the hearth (which will have to be made of non-combustible materials) can cover that 6" +/- high black panel at the bottom of the firebox. Here's an example: That firebox is essentially the same as yours, but with all of the black sheet metal face covered. I made the hearth about 14" high to be seating height, but it could be anything higher than about 6". Comments (6)floors are grayish? i see brownish in the picture. where's the furniture? If you want ideas, we need to see the entire space. what do you like? what's the budget? Can you tile or demo yourself? some ideas i like something a bit more simple or modern looking I love CleTile (or a any type of Zellige or earthenware tile) for this fireplace. take it all the way up You could get a solid piece of black granite or marble to use as your hearth. 4 years ago@Patricia Colwell Consulting @BeverlyFLADeziner @Mark Bischak, Architect @Brickwood Builders, Inc. all great suggestions and comments. Agree should have gone with a linear fireplace. But it's too late. The builder explained why the bottom trim is there now and the portion we don't want will be removed. It had to do with painting, but regardless it will be removed.
There is something about a wood stained floating mantel that I like. But I could opt for a painted traditional style mantel with supports/legs if that look would be better for my space.
Our ceilings are 16' at the peak and the room is large, vaulted and a lot of light. The TV will be a decent height for viewing. The room is really large. 36' wide by 25', though will have the seating area focused around the fireplace. The kitchen and eating area are on the opposite wall of the fire place (behind me as I took the picture. Open concept. And I do agree I should have chosen base cabinets and then done floating shelves instead of the big shelving units. But that will be a project for several years from now when I really dislike the shelves. But I do have a lot of fun blown glass and neat pieces to display.
Back to the fireplace. Here is a pic of one I like 0 screenshot it off Instagram so it's not a full pic and I don't have a hearth). A question I have is how far across does the mantel go? and should there be a gap between the tile and the wall edge and mantel or is it ok to have the wall below the mantel completely tiled?

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoI like when the mantle spans the entire width. at the very least, it should be longer than the width of the tv.
this mantle is too short and not thick enough. It would have looked better going all the way across the tile.
are you leaving the face of the fireplace as is or will then be some type of tile?
