So you really want to grow a Gingko tree?
Comments (44)Hi ~ I initiated this very long discussion thread 2 years ago & just now checked in as I just read an article from our Iowa DNR I quote a line: *The problem, though, is occasionally male trees undergo a metamorphosis and begin dropping smelly seeds. That's what Robinson suspects happened to an Iowa City tree after decades without problems.* ... Answers my original wonderment & still was once more a slave to this Duchess in my piece of soil last Fall. I still have the bucket of dried seeds to dare & saute & try - considering my allergy to fruit pulp! Currently all the fallen fruits in my thick wall of Baltic Ivy have grown to little Ginkgo trees & am harvesting ~ easy to pull at this stage so far. Last year there was a taker to the 2ft tall I had growing in a pot, hurray!!! I love my once Prince of a handsome tree now Duchess that rules my life in the Fall! FWIW...See MoreA couple of photos for you :)
Comments (8)Mike, I'm in Chowchilla, north of Fresno at the base of the Sierra Foothills. We've been having cool coastal winds blowing in lately over Pacheco Pass (a low pass in the coastal range) which have brought cooler temperatures and, that one day, a lot of dust and clouds. Alex, Thank you! As you can see from the second photo, not everyone embraces the lawn-less look haha. Only one other of my neighbors has gone lawn-less, but it is definitely a growing trend. And the wind is crazy! We have grown accustomed to earthquakes and tremors that we don't even notice them at times, but I don't think I could ever grow used to tornados and hurricanes! Youguys are champs! haha Denninmi, They are such great plants! Plant and forget them! The local nurseries are bringing in more and more exotic drought tolerant selections, these started showing up in huge numbers a few years ago....See MoreA couple of photos for you to enjoy :)
Comments (5)I definitely have to try B. Yuccoides! Looks almost like a small agave both in bloom and leaf form. Probably best as a zone 8 plant and up, but I have lots of zone 8 plants that do well with some extra protection, so if I get a B. Yuccoides, I will probably give it some winter protection, especially rain and snow protection! I dont think any plant likes wet and cold combined! So far the only cactus I have gotten to survive in my soil all year long without protection is eastern prickly pears (native) and out of about 20 pink lace cactus, about 3 survived (they were flooded in water and even frozen in solid ice for a good part of the winter and spring so I give them a ton of credit for surviving that!). -Alex...See MoreHow to give oral meds to a kitten
Comments (11)Oh, what an adorable baby, Carla! I just want to snuggle her guts out! I avoid liquid meds whenever possible, always requesting the pill form which I find much easier to administer to most cats. This is especially true now that I have discovered Pill Pockets. Why someone didn't come out with these little lifesavers decades ago, I'll never know. I'll never be without them again. Between the Pill Pockets and my handy piller (for the cats who won't eat Pill Pockets), I no longer have any real trouble getting pills down my cats when necessary. Laurie...See More- 4 years ago
