I would get a rug and window treatments before wall color.

I like the color you have on the walls now better than any of your samples. I also like your rug. What I dont like are the pillows on the couch. I would add some brighter pillows, and put up some new window treatments and add either a coffee table or ottoman rather than painting.

Here are how yellow colors look on your walls. Do not use any shin in paint. Just flat.

You need only to paint the walls. The rest of decor can just hint at the lavender in fabrics. Add some blue in a rug.

I think there is a color in this rug which matches the sofa. All you need is a touch.

@jck910 my current rug in this space is an 8x10, since I don’t have any furniture on that side (the other end table is going) should I use a smaller rug and show more of the hardwoods?

Not sure how you watch TV with it positioned off to the side, especially with a sectional made for lounging. The current wall color is dreary & dark & doesn't look good with your new couch color. I don't think any of your wall paint swatches are right either but you are on the right track. See if you can pick up a color from the brick work that also goes well with the taupe of the sectional...and yes, more colorful pillows.

It’s a curved tv and then we have it turned all the way at an angle. The couch is picking up very purple and weird looking in the photo. For better reference. I’m thinking more khaki which is the mortar color.

Instead of a yellow wall color, I would stick with a warm white, warm light taupe, or even a very light blue/green rather than the colder gray/blue you currently have.

because of your sofa, I wouldn't pick any of your samples. too much yellow in them. you need a softer, creamy white that leans away from yellow. Since your sofa looks like it has some purple tones in it, pick a white or a gray that leans in that color directions. look at these w/your sofa compared to the yellows you picked.

see how these compliment the sofa? I like the cool slate and delicate white. Or try one of the whites. and consider doing the white on your fireplace bricks.

a rug w/colors that match your sofa/tables and I tried to show you some new blinds, but it's hard to see.

diff rug. with this I'd paint your console a warmer white shade. or, get one in the natural wood tone to match the mantle. you have too many colors on the tv console, the teal end table, the lavender/taupe sofa, etc.

this would look better w/the tv. or this type of wood for the end tables. switch out one of the two pieces.

Is there much rustic in your house? If sectional is microfiber medium neutral, and tealish chest has the aged look, you could stay with brick, and find a neutral that blends well. Might be harder than finding a wall paint color...?

Here we are with Beth's rug, she made accent on sectional, to tie it up. I did accent on walls and teal accessories.

Everdebz not really the other half of the house has wainscoting up 1/3 of the wall. This hallway is right off the living room. The exterior style I would say is a craftsman, colonial mix.

Celery girl thank you for the awesome photoshopping. I do love that rug and am looking into purchasing it. This is an awful picture but if I were to do a 5x7 rather than my current 8x10. This is how it would look. Without lifting furniture and pushing it under, the 5ft edge would come to where the tape measure is being grabbed by the little helper.

what is the size of that white rug? is that a 5x7? so if it were to be under the sofa front feet, the edge of it would come to where the tape measure ends?

When choosing paint colors, you need to go with something you and your family will like and not worry about what others say. I feel there are too many people worried about choosing a paint color that other people will not like instead of choosing something that makes them happy! You are never going to make everyone happy because almost everyone, especially on here, have their own paint color preferences! Just keep in mind when you choose a paint, that it compliments the furnishings, rugs, and other decor!

That’s a really tough sofa color.

The sectional looks jammed in the space - can it be pulled back towards the photographer (in picture #1)? Or perhaps it’s just the way the picture was taken which makes it look like that?

Since the sectional is so very large and dark, I like the samples above of very light colors for the walls and the rug.

For anyone still invested in this... we have paint! Yay! I also purchased this rug to help pull together the teals and brighten up the room. Also getting ready to whitewash the brick and rip down that mantel. We were thinking about doing a surround but I think with the tv unit next to it, it might be too much. I purchased a large round black metal mirror to put above the fireplace to reflect some of the light from the kitchen windows.

I’ve looked more into it I think my style is more transitional with a mix of traditional. I love fluer-de-li patterns, sparkle, bright and light but also black hardware and pops or color. I don’t know I’m all over the place.

Anyways the room is coming together! Just need a curtain rod and I’m going to try out these curtains I have had lying around.

Me too, not pro. I like the lighter look! But I'd experiment with canvas art on fp, as a bridge piece between muted furniture piece, and lighter aqua curtains.

Actually, the mantle is too high which makes the mirror seem too high.

I'd move the mirror to the left, on the wall behind the table lamp. (not too high. about 5' from floor to CENTER of the mirror is proper height)

for the fireplace, I'd do some nice art, and maybe one or two items on the mantle

see if you can lower the mantle a bit (or, better yet, get a solid piece of wood that spans the entire width)

(of course it would be straight. I tried to straighten out you picture as best I could)

or, if you want to do similar style blk/white art, try this^

The other issue that catches my eye are the curtains. you don't have enough of them. While the height is fine, the width is not. I'd do a longer rod that extends at least another foot past the window. See that large bare right side? (I assume the left is similar?) you want the curtains to cover at least another foot of wall.

I'd also remove those baby blue because it just doesn't look great next to that mauve sofa. Do something in a sheer soft white or gray or subtle print. like these. see how they go past the edge of the window? also makes the window appear larger.

I think something like these simple soft white would be perfect.

See? I like much better in the soft white or gray. don't like the blue panels.

this white/gray one is nice too and would look better w/your fireplace. (do you have window trim around that window? hard to tell. if not, try some)

again, soft white, and notice how they are bunched. with what you have, you need at least 4 more panels (2 more on each side) I like this white a lot better.

you could also hang a little frame in that bare spot to the right like they've done here.

She's right that the curtains might be fine with the clear colors in your rug, but from a photo anyway, they don't seem good with the rest, 'sorry'....

Thanks Beth! Unfortunately when we ripped off the old mantle they used bricks that poke out to hold their old floating mantle. We really wanted to move it down but weren’t expecting the bricks jutting out.

I can extend the rod I wasn’t sure on the rule of thumb how long it should extend on the sides. While I have you here though if I have two windows next to each other with only about 3ft between would it be better to use one rod or two?

I do like the cream curtains photoshop and luckily have some on hand I can try out.

how far would the span be, including both windows and the 3' ? 7'? 8'? I think it could work, I'd have to see it though. you'd need a heavy duty rod.

might be best to do some shades and the curtains.

you could also hang a panel in the middle of that 3' portion like here:

just a shot again of how to do the outer edge of the window. you want something a little heavier than those blue panels you have so that it hangs straight.

as for the bricks that jut out, you can trim those off and lower the mantle. just DIY how to finish the cut edge of the brick. you painted the bricks, yes? even easier to hide. then once you lower it, whatever you put on the mantle should hide the cut ends
