Everything is moving to LED for energy saving purposes. Your best bet is to go to a lighting showroom that also carries fans to see them for yourself. Size and scale will matter here and it would be tough for us to comment on the type without (a) seeing a floorplan of your space, (b) knowing the style of your home, and (c) knowing what the height of your ceiling is.

So do you need a fan with a light?

I have a mid century modern home and would like to exchange 2 generic ceiling fans without lights that were in my home when I purchased and add a 3rd ceiling fan in a spare bedroom.

I would like 2 of the ceiling fans to have lights and one without a light, but all similar in style.

My issue is that everything that I find that is sleek and modern has an integrated LED that is 3000 k and 80 ish CRI.

I am fine with LED. I have LED in every light fixture in my home. I don't care if the light is integrated or I have to screw in LED lightbulbs.

What I am not okay with 3000 kelvin or anything without at least a 90 CRI.

Every other light fixture in my home has 5000 Kelvin and over 90 CRI. If I get 3000 k lights in the ceiling it will throw off the colors selected for each room under 5000 k lighting and my purples will turn muddy. I do a lot of painting and needlework as hobbies and really need 5000 k lighting.

The lighting that I have already replaced/added to my home other than canned lighting includes a Nelson Saucer CrissCross pendant in the living room and a Kilcher Sebine Oval Pendant over my desk, 3 Kilcher Sebine pendants over my makeup vanity and a Round Kilcher Sebine in my reading room.

I kept the light in the foyer that was original to the house, just painted it

Modern Fans has led lights with 3000K and 90 CRI. I personally like 3000K because I find 5000K too blue. I agree that you want a light with at least 90 CRI.

No light kits on ceiling fans. The quality of the light is never good for a room anyway.

Have you looked at halogen light ceiling fans? The lights aren't energy efficient like LED, and they burn hot, so you wouldn't want to use this for a light that stays on for a long time, but you might find the non-built-in light feature you're wanting with these.

Hmm, I wouldn't rely on a ceiling fan light for needlepoint. Also, I wouldn't put a fan in the bedroom. I'm still trying to figure out if you really need a fan, and if so maybe you only need it in one of the rooms.But you can still by fans without lights and then select from light kit attachments, there are still some that are not integrated.

homepro01 - thank you for your comment - I understand that many people like 3000 k or 4000 k, but I have had 5000 k for 20 years, special ordering light bulbs back in the incandescent days to get the lighting I was needing for painting. It is the color that works for me.

Grateful4Advice - I will check out halogen and see what is available. I haven't worked under halogen lights before, but worth a try.

RL Relocation LLC - The person who will be my most frequent overnight guest likes a fan on when they sleep and so do I. I think we got used to it when living in S. California where the weather was generally tepid and utility prices outrageous - so you don't use Heat/AC.

The lighting is not the task lighting, but with 5000 k everywhere else I don't think it would look right to have just 2 lights in the entire house with a different Kelvin.

I may just add fans without lights if I can't find something else, but will look at the separate light kits.

Actually you would be better off for true color to go 4000K. As for fans I never like the light you get from them and center lights in most rooms are the worst possible lighting. I do agree that 3000K is too yellow but I also do not like integrated bulbs I have had clients already have some burn out and no way to fix them.

Had to share - e-mailed Kichler and asked about the fans available with a non-integrated light or integrated with 5000 kelvin.

Buy a light kit with standard sockets. There is some general fooling going on here, because most states require LED or Fluorescent for energy reasons, they label everything LED, meanwhile most of the light kits have standard med sockets, especially the bowl style ones, they just say LED

Medium socket is in fact a regular old general socket for any lightbulb you like

I feel your pain. I want to use LEDs for energy efficiency but an integrated LED means you throw away the whole fixture in a few years when the lights burn out. Even if they really lasted 10 years (and they don't) I don't want to throw away the fixture. Did you ever find anything?

I just reviewed my comment in this thread from six months ago and realized how much I have learned about bulbs and ceiling fans since then. My advice above to look for something with a halogen bulb was outdated information. Halogens put out high-quality light and are still available in the United States as of 2020, but they have been banned in the EU and are being phased out in many other places due to their high energy consumption. Anyone looking for a fixture with longevity in terms of lightbulbs should probably be looking at LEDs. Some fluorescents are still around, but certain of the fluorescent bulbs are being phased out, so be careful which fluorescent bulbs you commit to if you go that route. Some people with light sensitivity actually do better with fluorescent bulbs than LEDs because of the difference in rate of flickering, but OLEDs will be hitting the general market soon, and those should be the ultimate in terms of comfortable lighting that is also energy efficient.

Regarding fans, many that are "fandeliers" or, in other words, fan/light combos, have integrated LED lighting which means once it burns out, the whole fixture is trash unless you want to just use the fan without the light. To me, this is such a wasteful way to design appliances. Some people will argue that the cost of replacing lightbulbs outweighs the cost of replacing the whole fixture eventually, but the hassle involved could easily negate any benefit. I've seen some fandeliers with integrated lighting claim to last something like 22 years if used for 6 hours per day, but as another commenter above noted, reviews of integrated LED longevity varies. You could end up with something that lasts just 3 years if you aren't careful. It all has to do with the quality of the LED and what the rated lifespan is when it comes to integrated lighting.

I have also learned that some of the integrated LEDs actually have replaceable light boxes so you won't have to replace the entire unit, but the quality and color of the integrated LED is still a problem for me. I can get either the 3000k or 4000k, but not a 5000k unless it is a variable temperature light, which people are complaining about not being accurate and from what I have been able to find the CRI (Color Rendering Index on the variable temperature lights is not great.

I think they have a long way to go to get to a point where integrated LEDs will meet my needs.

Kind of sucks because I saw a chandelier for over my dining room table that made my heart sing, but once again, it is only available with integrated LED lights..

@Jennifer Hogan At some point you do have to ask how long you either expect to be in the home or have the fixture prior to replacement as integrated LED units are supposed to long outlast bulbs. You could reasonably expect 20 years from many of the integrated LED units. In my particular case, I am remodeling a home I have no plans to leave for decades and would prefer to find fixtures with replaceable bulbs so that even if I do have to change them more often, at least I won't be stuck with a useless fixture in 20 years if I am here that long. Even with fixtures with replaceable bulbs, it is asking a lot to expect them to still be up-to-date and working their best after many decades with the planned obsolescence built into many components that even the better manufacturers have no choice but to source when putting together their units.

It seems to me that this field is just itching for someone with a little electrical know-how to start a company that will build a set of simple light fixtures that use those retro LED bulbs that go in recessed lighting. When the LEDs stop working, just buy a new retro bulb..... who wants to start that company? I will be your first customer!

I have bought 2 ceiling fans with integrated light where the lights burnt out after a year. To buy one again would be abolute insanity. You can have removable leds. And you can get them with standard bases with any wattage and color you can imagine. A 50 watt led in any color is very bring indoors.

Same concern with products I am ordering for my remodel, that something that says it has an LED lifespan of 30,000 to 50,000 hours might actually have far, far less.

So after about 12+ hours of searching for the same thing I ran into this thread. I am this close to just going with a tan with no lights and installing recessed lights because I simply will not install a fan with yellow lighting that I know I will hate. For those who are still searching, I found one fan from Lucci Air that has a replaceable LED light.

It's discontinued!!!! Nooooo. I have been searching for the same thing. We bought a fan with an integrated LED and it lasted a year and the light went out completely. No way to replace it so I have to replace the whole fan. As I am looking at new fans this is a common theme. Seems a bit much to have to pay $100 to have to replace a light.

Read more reviews of that unit because multiple users are saying the lights flicker. This is a common problem with dimmer and lighting components that aren't correctly matched.

I am feeling like it maybe energy efficient, and perhaps the lighting companies have long term business when you have to toss your fan when the light goes out and purchase a new fan. Humm, an also maybe not the best environmentally friendly tossing fans due to light out.

Environmentally friendly my tush. Something goes wrong with every one I’ve bought. At least the cost has dropped, I’m buying new ones far too often.
