12 inch tile too small for kitchen floor??
Comments (9)FWIW, originally set 12" tile through the entry, hall and in the dining/kitchen back in the early 90s. Now that I've finished the back addition, adjacent to the dining/kitchen, I'm preparing to rip out our 70s kitchen, that tiled floor in the dining/kitchen and removing what was the exterior wall of the house to open it up. While looking at the different flooring options, the feedback from personal/business friends in design, realty, or within the industry is nothing less than 17" in design for the foreseeable future. Funny thing is, I still used a 12" in our ~5'x8' 2nd bath a couple years ago and liked the resulting scale and feel it gave when done. Although we wanted to move away from tile to something more forgiving underfoot, like some floating laminates, we'll probably more than likely take the tile advise and go with a 17" or larger in the kitchen. Maybe something in a porcelain that can be laid with 1/8" inch grout lines or less and using the floating laminate through the dining to the addition....See More12 X12 Black tile countertop for B&W Cottage Kitchen
Comments (14)To everyone: thanks so much again! Your contributions are so helpful to me. Living overseas and not close to places like HD (I miss my HD!) makes this project a little more challenging. Igloochic, Rosie and Madeyna: do you remember how much the granite tiles cost? I like the idea of granite tiles but I just assumed that they were still pretty expensive albeit not like the slabs. Laying them diagonally sounds interesting but would that look okay with the subway tile? Right now I can't play with the different sizes. Also, would inserting some kind of black accent tile into the subway tile (American Olean-Greenwich Village) make it more interesting or just leave it plain? Also, is this color of subway tile going to go with the white stove and cabs that is shown in Bill Vincent's photo? Is the Greenwich Village tile too bisque looking? I like the color but I'm not sure of the match. What do you all think? Bill: I just went "wow" when I saw your photo of the B&W kitchen you did. It looks just like mine in terms of the arrangement with the window and white stove on the right. Square footage will be a bit smaller but how cute is this!! I am soooo jazzed! Hope mine looks this good. My contractor can certainly do ceramic tile laying but is it just as easy to do using granite tiles? Would you recommend using black grout? Also, not sure about the cost between ceramic and granite. Do you know approx. the difference between the two? Granite would be nice but I just assumed that it would cost quite a bit more. TX Ccoombs1: yes, we will have some red accents!...See MoreWhich direction to lay 12x24 inch tile
Comments (7)We laid our 8x12 tiles left to right in the same direction as the length of the vanity, which is along the back wall just like in your photo. So perpendicular to the door, the same as shown in the photo above. I initially disagreed with DH's decision to lay the tile in this direction but now think it was the better option....See MoreBullnose tile size wrong for half wall of 12X24 tile?
Comments (7)Thank you both for confirming my suspicion. Skippack - the 12X24 is plain white. I looked at a few other tiles in a longer bullnose but their white looks different. It is amazing how much variation there is in "plain white" tile. :O I will look into the Schluter edge that I think will look better than 4 bullnose tiles per every one 12X24 tile. I agree that it would be too "busy" vs the simple, clean 12X24 shower tile look I'm going for....See Morekelly
