Folding attic stairs
Comments (4)Attic access is required by code for firefighter access to attics over a certain size. We don't know the applicable code but for the past 30 years CABO and its successor the IRC have required a 22" wide opening but no stair or ladder. The building code should not be an issue in this case but I strongly recommend a load capacity greater than 250 lbs. Order a unit that is a foot longer than you need and remove a foot from the bottom....See MoreLooking for drop down attic stairs with low incline
Comments (0)We're installing drop down stairs to the unfinished attic. We access the attic fairly often, so want something that closest mimics actual stairs, something sturdy with an incline of 50 degrees or less (regular stairs are 40 degrees, I think). This will be in a smallish hallway (approx 36"Wx72"L) from which we enter several other rooms, so there's not room to build a permanent staircase at this time (this would have to go somewhere else in the house and would be part of a larger project that would include finishing the attic). I see all these kits for pulldown ladders that you can buy at hardware stores, but they look flimsy and steep. I want the more substantial drop-down stairs that have a lower incline and higher weight load, but can't seem to find where/how to buy one. Advice?...See MoreReplacing pull down attic staircase
Comments (2)The company referenced above sells the Bessler Disappearing Stair. My prior house had one of those installed when it was built in 1931 and it was comfortable to use. Ours did not have a handrail but otherwise appears to be identical to the models sold today. My previous experience was with a fold down stair which required a ladder and muscles to unlatch and return to storage position. The disappearing stairs was a definite upgrade which required only a slight tug on the pull string to let it down and a small push to return it to locked position. Accessing the attic was a trivial matter for anyone of reasonable mobility. Despite being a secure and comfortable model, make no mistake, it feels more like a ladder than a stairway. The stairs are heavy duty enough to have one person at the top and another on the bottom to move something lengthy like a Christmas tree. The downside is you have to keep a large area at the top clear for storing the ladder....See MorePull-down attic stair hinge bent
Comments (2)We have the same problem. When pulling down the stairs the spring will not catch in the hinge arm. We use a 3/4” dowel to push it in the arm as it is coming down. Don’t go up there often, so we put up with it....See MoreCarly Dickson
