Help me finish the design of my new South FL landscape!
Comments (34)In the beginning, I thought this thread was about making use of what could be made into something good, and getting rid of the rest. I didn't understand that the focus was on using pieces of a landscape somewhere, somehow. It seems to me that many existing "pieces" of the puzzle, if used, will only guaranty an undesirable outcome. There are many smallish, highly ornamental, cute pairs of plants (bougainvillia, topiary, pompoms, etc.) that beg to be used to flank a passageway. But there are not that many passageways that need flanking. There are plants in bad positions that need to be moved, but they are too big to move without a great deal of trouble or expense. Though there are many pictures attached to the thread, they are isolated shots that don't link areas. It's hard to develop a fluid concept of the site. Truth is, trying to make sense of the existing puzzle pieces would be an unpleasant job if I could be there doing it on site. And that would be much easier than trying to do it by remote. I think it was mentioned that it would be a good idea to return some items. I understand the difficulty and unpleasantness with that, but honestly, I think that is the best suggestion. What this situation really needs is a good designer who can make a personal visit, and a willingness of the owner to find another way to dispose of all the things that don't fit or that can't be made to fit without too much sacrifice. I believe the owner does want a finished product that's actually nice. But there only so much a person can squeeze in before the objects begin to work against him. It doesn't need more "objects" as much as it needs continuity and linking. This is not an attempt to say "I'm out." I'm just saying that the project is frustrating and I wish I could help you more, Relleum, but other than offering piecemeal advice, don't know if I can....See MoreWANTED: New to Aquatics - Starting from scratch
Comments (4)I have..... water lilies: "Joey Tomaczek" (a hardy canary yellow) and "Texas Dawn" (softer yellow much larger bloom, also a hardy lily) Check out the photo at http://www.waterplantsforponds.com/hardy-water-lilies/texas-dawn.htm I also have bacopa and violet stemmed taro. I'll send any or all to you for postage. I don't want anything in return. I was a newbie at this once too, and I really appreciated all the pass-along plants people gave me. Comments (8)Not a pro. I live just south of you in Minnesota. We had hardwood throughout the first floor of our home in our last house, and will have hardwood throughout most of the first floor of our home in the next one (mudroom will be LVT - no option to do hard wood there...and actually hardwood was our ONLY choice virtually everywhere else, except it was an upgrade from carpet in the living room). Most high end homes here have wall-to-wall wood, and most older homes built circa 1920 also have all hardwood. Doesn't seem to be an issue. I would not choose tile everywhere as you have done - it's cold (makes it even worse in our climate) and hard. Not to mention it doesn't LOOK cozy and inviting, and grout is a PITA to clean. Assuming your house will be climate controlled, shrinking and swelling of your wood shouldn't be a problem. We never had an issue in our last home. If you want tile everywhere, that's a different story, but I wouldn't do it just because you're concerned about the weather/water. I also think the warm, medium wood tone you've chosen doesn't pair well with a white marble look tile. If you do wood everywhere you won't have to worry about them tying in together....See MoreNeed help with Landscaping Idea, starting from scratch
Comments (7)If a landscape designer is in the budget, start there to get some ideas. If not, remove the grass from a nice wide planting bed on either side of the stairs. Go too a good local nursery and choose shrubs that will achieve the look you want (formal, casual)get them planted and mulch well, Perhaps add some annuals in front for summer color. You need bigger hanging plants on the porch. Build a pathway from the driveway to the front door....See MoreFlo Mangan
