In general, does the floor installer finish quarter round?

I have installers finishing up a flooring install. I get the feeling that they're not planning on finishing the quarter round (filling nail holes, painting, caulking gap between quarter round and base board). The salesman didn't specifically mention if they would do it or if I was responsible so before they finish and I have to have this conversation with them, I was wondering... in general, who finishes the quarter round?

The contract dictates what happens. Often times painters deal with this. Other times it is the flooring company - as per their contract.

Go ahead and ask for a rework of the quote to INCLUDE the cost of the finishing. You will be expected to pay for it if it is not already included in the quote.

In today's lawsuit happy building arena the concept of "inclusive" contracts is the rule. In other words, if it specifically STATES something will happen then that's what you can expect. If it says NOTHING about a topic that means nothing will be done - nor was it paid for.

Go ahead and ask for it to be included...so that you can pay for it and therefore expect it to be done.

I rarely do painting and most of my proposals read "Does not include any touchup painting or a complete dust cleanup". On construction jobs where we install shoemold, the painters caulk, fill, sand, prime and paint. If we're doing one room, the customer asks, has the paint, and we have a good rapport, I'll add something in for it.

We used a miter saw to cut the molding, jigsaw for tricky spots. We got one of those Ryobi kits that had several tools in the box. We need a tile saw but only for one project. We will purchase a new saw, use it, then craiglist it to recoop most money spent. We have done this with rototiller and concrete mixer with no problem. Look in the pennysavers and craigslist for folks like me selling things slightly used, then sell it again when you are done. There are many ways to save money, renting is not one of them that is for sure. I would recommend the little saw that undercuts your door trims, really worth it. You put a pc of scrap next to doorway then use little saw to cut off the doorjam. Your new floor will fit under the jam perfectly. I would also recommend using blue painters tape when you are worried about line chipping up when you cut it. Saved many boards doing that.

I understand the purpose of molding along the baseboards. I have shoe and like it. But if you are inexperienced and see lots of pictures of plain baseboards, arrange to have them installed and the installer does not mention quarter round or shoe, you're going to be disappointed. Some people go to the expense of having the base scribed to the floor. Options - or what will be done - should be discussed and in writing up front. No surprises! What I was calling unprofessional was the notion of a 'huge caulk joint'. That is not a professional option. Baseboard gaps are covered with molding not filled with caulk. I would much rather come home to molding than caulk!

Ditto what G&S mentions, except for filling nail holes is it's a prefnished hardwood quarter round. Naturally there may be differences from one region to another.

Caulk can be flexible, however it’s a tough job to caulk at the floor. The caulk absolutely needs to be covered with paint, so it is really a tape job to ensure the paint completely covers all the caulk. It caulk is not painted it gets filthy at the floor level, and can not be cleaned. Shoe works if the tile is level, otherwise it is a very tricky job and obviously will still have gaps at the grout joints.

Thanks for your replies. As this was my first flooring install, I didn't even consider that they would leave something unfinished. I certainly would have preferred that the salesperson mentioned that it wouldn't be done. They are the professionals who do this on a daily basis. I didn't even know that this would be something I had to ask about. Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to reply and hopefully this thread might help someone else in my position.
