I don't have a cat, so why am I buying cat food?
Comments (10)Thanks so much for the help! See .. I thought feeding all of those cats out of one big feeder is very wrong too. Thanks for validating one of my concerns. We have the five dogs and there is no way I'd feed them out of one big dish, they all have their own dishes and a few their own eating areas due to when they were strays it caused food aggression issues with other dogs ( not people ). If left to their own being fed out of a large dish, the food aggression dogs would drive the others out and fights would ensue to regain the bowl .. basically everything that's happening to this cat. So, I do blame the people for not getting involved on her behalf. She's an adult cat, my DH ( who had cats as a child ) thinks she's maybe 6 - 8 years old ?? I think right now I'm going to try to get her back into shape, she's eating for me and she seems very content to hang out down here now. As we sat on the porch last night, she hung out on my DH's lap and soaked up the attention. We live in NC and it's been one of the hardest states hit by unemployment, the papers are filled with people giving away their animals. The rescues and humane socities are also filled .. we went through the whole thing with trying to find Daisy ( the Basset my DHbrought home last year ) a home or into rescue and never could, so we just kept her. I'm also going to call and talk to our vet about a dewormer for her, they'll be able to give me an idea how much it would run and if they need to see her first. They are pretty good about giving us a break when the animal is a stray, they did with Daisy and her whole heart worm treatment. Thanks again everyone, hopefully we can get her looking a little better soon :)...See MoreShelter for semi-feral cat
Comments (9)We have a cat house DH built from plans from a website. She uses it mainly in cold weather, but I do see her come out of it when its rainy also. Our feral cat Baby never took to the snuggle safe, I thought it would be great for her to keep warm. We added a kennel heater about 2 yrs ago and she uses the house all winter. We put straw in it, and change it out a couple times a season. Blankets & textiles are a no-no, they can get musty, buggy, & can freeze if wet. We placed the house in a safe spot in our driveway, behind a boat that's stored all winter, and backs up to our backyard, so she doesn't have to worry about anything coming from behind her (thanks to 2 barky dogs, we don't get much critter traffic in the backyard) and can see the driveway in front of her. DH shovels her a path out of the house when it snows and she always walks along the sidewalk after he shovels, its cute to see. But it would be great if you could get her to come inside, maybe as the weather cools off she will start coming in for you. Is she spayed yet? That is a big concern, unless you want kittens. Good luck with her. Here is a link that might be useful: house plans site...See MoreSemi-feral cat: My plan is not proceeding well.
Comments (29)I've made note of that eye medicine, Mountain Lady. I may need it. I got Sandy into the cat carrier and to the vet this morning. Her eyes are very badly infected, and the ear mites they treated her for before are as bad as ever. The poor cat must be so uncomfortable. She tolerated being handled by the vet amazingly well. He washed out her ears pretty thoroughly and put ointment in her eyes. He also gave her another long-lasting antibiotic shot and treated the ear mites again. And he clipped her nails. He told me my only choices were to treat her for these problems or put her to sleep. Of course I said I would give treatment my best shot. He also said she's not a mean cat; she's a good girl. I agree. I thought about how to proceed with the treatment, and decided the best way for me to have access to her twice a day is to raise the dog crate up onto the bed so I can reach farther in. So I went to the hardware store and bought a tarp to protect the bed. I obviously can't deal with the little tube of eye ointment while wearing leather gloves, so I hope we can pull this off without injury--to me. I have severe Raynaud's, and even though we're not officially in winter yet I already have painful sores on my fingers, caused by a lack of blood flow. If they are opened, that would not be a good thing. I sure hope she can be restored to heath. I can't help wondering why this cat contracted so many things: eye infection, ear mites, fleas. I hope one fed off the other, and this doesn't indicate an impaired immune system that can never be improved. I've now spent $300 on her vet care, and that's a chunk of money for me. Between that and the report on her eyes and ears, I was feeling rather discouraged when we left the vet's. But then I saw a dead dog taken out on a stretcher, and his crying owners. I got in my car and cried, too--for them and for animals everywhere--but at the same time I realized how lucky I am....See MoreFeral cat colony
Comments (23)You know, "Non-published", there isn't a whole heck of a lot you can tell me about possums. I rehab them mainly because they are one of the easiest animals to relocate and because they don't carry most of the diseases that raccoons, and yes, cats carry. The reason I offered to take the feral cats was not a high minded idea. They needed a home, and I had land and shelter for them. I didn't read most of your comments because, honestly, I don't care. I don't care if the TNR program is a good thing or a bad thing. Don't care. Don't care what other people think about it. Don't care. Don't care if you think I am a cat hoarder. Don't care. Don't care if you think I am lying. Don't care. I don't feel like I have to explain myself to you or anyone, but the reason I offered to take the ferals is because I went to the shelter weekly to pick up injured and orphan possums. They had two very plain cats that had been at the shelter for almost a year and were going to be put down because no one had picked them. I offered to take them. Over time, they asked me to take the Galveston ferals, which were six, I think. The Houston ferals ....someone who knew me said I might take them, and I did. I am not going to debate this with you because I think you are nuttier than a cat hoarder and like I said before, I don't care. I understand that people usually prefer one animal over another....like they prefer dogs over cats. That is natural. But people who have a deep seated hatred of cats, I have found to be very unbalanced. But, again, I don't care and I don't have to explain myself to anyone on the internet. If you don't like what I do.....there is some mistletoe pinned to my shirttail....See Moreorganic_kitten
