Smart speaker recommendations

Looking for a reliable unit that has support for calling, texting and messaging features. All of those features, not just some, mind you. TIA

Is there a reason you need a speaker rather than use those features on a smart phone hands free? I have a Google home mini but find I still use Google on my phone more to do things hands free when calling and texting. Mary

FWIW;.

Perhaps look around at the ifttt.com website. There you can find lots of applets to add features to google home and other smart speakers. ifttt can seem intimidating if you're not a little bit geeky.

I just went through the same buying process. I'm installing two more pair of wall speakers tomorrow to dress out a Sonos network. I listened to the MLCR's and the M6's from Sonance and both of the SpeakerCraft speakers. I went in biased towards the Modernos. Both speakers had similar 92dB efficiency ratings and both were 8ohm, which is what I wanted. The Speakercraft had slightly better low end, the Modernos were a little brighter. If installing a subwoofer you can beef up the bass with that. One advantage of the SpeakerCraft model was the adjustable tweeter. One room of mine has a tricky location and that seems like a selling point to me. I did a fair amount of blind A/B and actually liked the SpeakerCraft better.

Thanks for response technospeak. At what wattage or level does is the line considered no longer low voltage? For example if I get a small 2 channel amp to run the speakers, it would be considered low voltage....but if its a hi current hi wattage amp....does it then change to a need for a necessary depth? or is high voltage reserved for other types of equipment for power like landscape lighting or something else? You definitely exceeded my intelligence when you wrote about the boxes and blank plates and gaskets. I will need to google what a setup as you mentioned looks like. I can visuallize pvc running under ground but I'm unsure what the other entry into ground, boxes, and plates you mention. I currently have rock speakers but I'm now contemplating speakers to be mounted on my back fence. I think I no longer want equipment on the ground taking up walking area or on grass. I was thinking of converting to landscaping and so the rock speakers seemed like a good choice, but between growth of plants or if I never plant anything, speakers off the ground might be a better option for versatility in future changes. Unless I plant a tree in front of them lol. I intend to start digging this upcoming week. I had some medical issues which has caused a postponement of some things. I have to make sure I don't accidently cut into spectrum wires or att wires while I'm digging the trench. Thanks again technospeak. If you have some customer images or example of a final product or even the install process showing the pieces you mention, the conduit, boxes, etc... that would be greatly appreciated. I'll be googling as best i can what you said before I buy some pvc or anything else.

The really bigger question you need to ask yourself on this is what Ecosystem you want to buy into. Amazon, Google and Apple are trying to attract as many peripheral devices into their Ecosystem as they can so you the end user can have pretty close to a whole house smart home system without much fuss. Some devices have played "Switzerland" and were designed to be compatible with multiple Ecosystems. Others just don't have the budget for all the royalties these big players charge to become part of their Ecosystem so they just pick one and hope for the best. Which Ecosystem is the best? Well, that can be debated for years to come with no clear answer. Apple usually wins these tech battles eventually but Google has the most data to draw from to make its technology smart. Amazon is willing to cut off both its arms cost wise to maximize their infrastructure and only later looks to make a profit. It's really anyone's game.

By smart toilet, do you mean one with a washlet type of bidet toilet seat? I am remodeling and am going with a Toto washlet. I am not going with a Neorest which is their integrated model. It might have some minor high tech features versus the 550 which I am getting but none that seemed to make much functional difference for me. The Neorest is very sleek looking and doesn't have any kind of back tank. FWIW, I think the lower end model is not a comfort height which may or may not be a factor. If you go with a Toto toilet and washlet seat, get one of the Toto models which are Connect Plus. This means that the washlet seat can be attached with internal connections which eliminates the unsightly exterior connections and which make it pretty much aesthetically equivalent to the Neorest. Also Toto has what is called a "modern" seat option which is much slimmer than their older model seats and so if you go with a washlet, you would probably want to get the modern seat for design purposes. There might be other differences between the Neorest and a Toto Connect Plus with a 550 modern seat but, if so, I don't know and the Neorest was never considered by me because I wanted a Universal Height toilet. I think some of the Neorests are self cleaning but I don't need my toilet cleaned hourly so that wasn't something I coveted. I am satisfied that my 550 washlet provides the same bidet experience functionally and also has unnecessary but cool options - ie. the night light and the automatic open and close lid which I didn't need but got because the price differential between the 550 and the 500 model was de minimis.

It is not for me. The user is going to be a a low vision user. And smartphones are a bad choice for some low vision users. Think: breakage. So the speaker makes more sense.

So again, the specs are a reliable smart speaker that has support for calling, texting and messaging features. All of those features, not just some.

PS - personally, I was thinking of using such a speaker myself too in lieu of buying a smartphone.

How does a smart speaker call and text without a smart phone being involved? Assume you still need a cell carrier. I know 2 people with low vision that can't drive anymore. Both use the newer big screen Apple phones and have large icons and use all the voice capabilities and seem to get along fine. Mary

1. Hmmm...this makes me wonder if one of those devices could be used by a good friend who recently had a stroke. She has an iphone but needs someone to hold it for her to use. She's in a rehab facility.

I have a little folding stand on my night table for my phone or tablet. Maybe that would work for the person. Got it for less than $10 at the store in the cell accessory department and it folds up for travel in my tablet case. Mary

Hmm, I assumed originally that it could do something like a connect to a PC and make a Skype Call but yes, it may try to connect to a smart phone instead.

I would be curious to know. My Google home mini works off my android phone where all my contacts are stored. Never tried to see if it would work off a PC. I wouldn't rely on it toyally with the PC because if the power goes out or the internet goes out then Wi-Fi calling is useless. Mary
