Shrub/Small Tree ID
Comments (5)Thanks for the potential ID. I'll be checking this year for the "samaras" In previous years I've been cutting off the fruit and new branches to keep the plant at its current size. The hope was that if it was actually a bad plant it wouldn't spread. ~Persimmons...See MoreWhite Flowering Shrub/small tree ID help please!
Comments (4)NO! Do not do a rejuvenation to any Viburnum!! Michael Dirr, who wrote the book on them and who has developed many of them, recommends infrequent and light pruning of Viburnums, if any at all. This is my favorite shrub. I have at least two dozen and about 8 different cultivars. I believe the one you have is a Burkwood, but it could also be Judd. Either way, it's gorgeous, pretty much pest- and maintence free, and you should definitely NOT coppice it. You do that to a Rose of Sharon or a lilac, but never to a Viburnum. Comments (7)It looks similar to Poinsettia, but it’s a tree. of course i’ve seen Poinsettia the size of 8’ shrubs in So FL, but this is something different. i mean it’s not xmas poinsettia, but perhaps other kind of Euphorbia.. i am looking thru the pics on Garden.. This tree was may be 10-12’ tall , didn’t take a full pic!...See MoreSmall tree/large shrub ID please
Comments (14)Thanks, one and all, especially iochroma. You hit it. Nice one. Carol. Further research does show that it is more similar to Macadamia than I thought/remembered. All Macadamia I saw in Australia were cultivated, so overall appearance did throw me. macranthos. The garden where this is, Morrab Gardens, is full of allsorts of plants, with many from Aus/NZ, and other places, eg Wollemia nobilis, Grevillias , Phyllocladus, Puyas, and a 30'+ Metasequoia. I pop down there every few months, and ALWAYS spot something I hadn't seen before. They did attempt, at one point, a couple of Banksia, but they expired. I suspect that they suffered from phosphorus toxidity. A pity as I love the Banksias. Temperatures, on average, are lows of 4C (39F), but -4C has been recorded. Many of their plants would NOT like that temperature, but being only 150m from the sea they probably wouldn't get that low....See MoreTNflowerlover Zone 7a
