polished vs honed and light vs dark granite/quartzite
Comments (38)I have honed dark granite right now and it stains like crazy esp anything remotely oily. Tried everything to seal it and nothing worked. It was in the house when we bought it and we are now remodeling the kitchen and it it will be gone. Replacing with polished Sea Pearl quartzite if the quote is right (fingers crossed). It's been a process because this kitchen has extremely high end (previous owner installed) cabinets with a high gloss finish in teal blue - gorgeous but challenging and way to expensive to replace. Very sleek and modern. Thanks to the oven forum we chose the Miele Master Chef oven (wanted that rotisserie) and warming drawer and after reading on the Refrigerator Forum we chose the Thermador Freedom Towers for the fridge and freezer. LOL we inquired about getting panels for them to match the cabinets and yikes, the cost was more than the appliances cost. So stainless fronts it is. Everyone here is so helpful - certainly appreciate this site and the forums....See MoreMy head is spinning with countertop choices
Comments (30)I agree with Leading Edge Countertops above. What is the big deal with using a trivet? I usually just toss a good pot holder on my granite counter to set a pot on. Or, I use one of the unused burners on my rangetop to set hot things down on. I feel like you are excluding the majority of all counters because of your requirement to be able to set hot things down on it. Seems like not a good rationale, sorry. If you absolutely must set hot things on the counter, then soapstone is the surface you can use with 100% confidence. Some soapstones are harder than others; do some research on this. Soapstone can scratch, but there is a wide range on how soft different soapstones are, and there are some that will be harder to scratch. Also, some hot things placed on a cold countertop will crack - like pyrex or porcelain baking dishes. So setting aside whether the counter will take it, think about whether your pans can take it....See MoreWhich sink better for my dirty family - stainless or silgranit?
Comments (11)Dominos - you have omitted a crucial piece of information for this decision which is what is the color of Silgranit you are considering? I have a Silgranit sink in anthracite (black). It is easy care and shows nothing, and can take abuse from my family. BUT, because I think it's the easiest sink I've ever had, I recommended it to my friend. She heard my enthusiasm, and bought one for her kitchen, but she bought it in the white color. She finds it very hard to keep looking clean. She showed me how easily it stains from coffee and wine, and also how difficult it is to keep looking clean and get those stains out. I feel terribly guilty. I had no idea the white color would behave so differently from the anthracite. After seeing first-hand my friend demonstrate the easy staining and the difficult cleaning of the white color, I cannot recommend it. I would absolutely though buy another in anthracite without hesitation, and the other Silgranit dark colors are likely just as good. Stainless steel also has its advantages, as mentioned in posts above. You must be OK with patina, it bothers some people and not others. I do think gauge is important in a stainless steel sink, and I would only get a 16-gauge, not an 18 or 20 (higher number means thinner gauge). People on this Forum love the Kraus 16-gauge sinks; I've never seen a bad review of them. I think you need to see both kinds of sinks in a store before deciding which material is best for you....See MorePro and cons of using mont blanc quartzite for island, maintenance etc
Comments (12)@ericval Hi, I've had mine for a year now and it still looks new. It doesn't stain, no rings, etc. It is a very durable stone. I used a matte white rectangle tile set on the diagonal. However, I tried it with many gray tiles, but we went with white because of the hood I chose. Here is an old, bad, photo, but you can't really make out the backsplash. I'll try to take another later today which shows the backsplash and the quartzite better....See Morepoohla19
