dining room Lighting Design Dilemma

oversized chandelier over round table

Hi all,
Found beautiful chandelier (34” round) for family dining room table (60” round). This dining area is open into the kitchen. 10’ ceilings. Because of the direction of the kitchen island, it doesn’t have any pendants. Thus the light over the dining room needs to be a statement.

Is it too big for the size of the table?

How high would you hang from the table? Table is 30” and the standard 30-36” over the table seems so low.

Your recommendations are much appreciated.

Chandelier is hung. Thank you all for you help. Size is perfect for the room. Need to move the plant out of the way and find a fun abstract art piece for that wall

Love the fixture! I would do a cardboard mock up and hold it in place to see how the scale looks to you.

the problem is you only have 10 ft ceilings, so you cant really hang it any high/lower especially since it is made with hooks that attach to the stem, whatever the shortest hanging height is you would have to go with. you need to look at the length when shopping as well as the width, this looks like it has a 36-inch height that cannot be adjusted due to the way the rods assemble to hold the fixture up. that means you dont really have an option to make it shorter.

One thing I do remember from Int. Des. classes (I'm *not* an Int. Designer, but an Art History major that had ID dreams many moons ago ;))was that you added the length and width of the room and used this figure as the diameter, in inches, of a chandelier (ie, a 22" in diameter fixture for a 10x12 room), *but* that was if the lighting was centered in the room (IIRC). Another was that the fixture should be half the width of the table (round or square). So with your 56" round table a 28"/diameter fixture would be the absolute perfect size. I don't see what an inch and a half smaller would really matter. Go for it!

I’ve found that having a fan over a dining room table cools the food too quickly. I’d go for just a beautiful chandelier. If you post pics of your space there are some great people on here that will help you select the right one.

I think I understand your approach and appreciate it in theory, but in application, I think this fixture will dominate the room and everything in it in an unfortunate way. It won't play well with the other beauties there. Scale it back and consider how a fixture of craft and artistry delivers its own brand of drama.

position it higher and make certain its just for accent/ added light...not the main light source. It has a certain drama to it, yet simple. Agree w round, to contrast w angle ceiling and all the rectangles at window. As Lucky said, you might "luck " out and find it gives a lot of light. But I think it has to rest a bit high.

I just looked it up:

Canopy Dimension Dia:6in

Canopy Dimension H:1in

Chandelier Dim Dia:34in

Chandelier Dim H:28in

Overall Diameter:34in

Overall Dimension H:29.5in

Max Hanging Height:71.5

Minimum Hanging Height: 29.5 _______ measure down and see where it lands i think it will be fine

Min hanging height is where you are at if you look at the pictures i posted I think the one on the right is a 10 ft ceiling but either way that is the min hanging height. so just measure down even hang a string with a ballon or something just to see where it lands... I could see this over your island as well.

that would put it at 8.5 feet off the floor i thnk that puts about 3 ft between the table and the fixture....math not my strong point lol

Sounds fine to me I love the fixture and would not take away from it by adding another one, IMO DR fixtures need to have a wow factor and stand alone.

That's a great light fixture! Go for it! Most people get the size of a chandelier wrong and go too small so what you're thinking might be too big might actually be the right size! It will look great!

I'm sure someone already mentioned size:

Rule of thumb: chandelier should be ½ to ¾ the width of your table. So for a 60" round table, your chandelier is fine - minimum would be 30" in width to 45" width centered over the table.
