Thanks for all the suggestions. Where the entrance widens is actually where to kitchen begins (appliances are hidden to the left), I've added a wooden bar table and black chairs that go up against the right wall in the kitchen. The length of the entrance before it widens is actually 10ft now that I'm measuring it with tape. I'm picturing a 6ft runner at the entrance and then a 3x5 area rug in the kitchen (where it widens in the pic). Do you think the runner and area rug should be a set that go together? Any help with that would be great!

You really don’t need all that beautiful flooring covered..only front door area...leave hallway along stairway empty and add your decor...maybe a cute slender bench with a basket for umbrellas...I don’t have one hallway rug...only placed a rug at each door entrance and have a huge dog running around..have wood floors throughout my home first home 23 years floors still looked like new..and this home 5 years..no wear at all...why Do you feel the need to cover the beautiful wood floor?

I agreed with Melissa about black. I like colors to relate to each other and am not a total convert of the random pop of color. I would look for a rug that incorporates black, the stone color of the floor and then the extra color, maybe pull a color from the room you are entering into.

If you dont like the idea of a runner at all then I suggest you stay away from using the same mat in the two spots. I would use a round mat at the bottom of the stairs and a rectangular or semicircle mat at the entrance in different but complenentary colors. Many rugs on wayfair such as the above can be purchased in various shapes and sizes.
