Sofa? Sectional? Living room Help!
Comments (14)Is that the kitchen to the side of the other end of the room? I would definitely make that an eating/game table/homework/projects area, or if you don't need that, make it a separate reading/chatting space for when not watching TV. The two ideas could be combined. Why not put the TV between the doors? A flat screen can go on a console table or media stand and it looks like you could get a good size one there (45-50, maybe 50-60 inches?). Maybe not giant to ginormous, but plenty big unless that space is smaller than it looks. If you don't put a TV there, it has to go on one of the two end walls. That means the TV will either seriously limit your seating options on the stair end (sofa/love seat against the stairs will not be a good viewing angle, so you are probably looking at primary seating needing to float between the stair landing and the sliding doors and leaving traffic paths around it) or you flip and put the TV at the opposite end of the long room and the TV viewing is the cozy nook -- BUT the TV size may have to be limited by the space size. You can't sit on top of a really big screen. If your kitchen is off to the side, consider whether you will want to see the TV from there. It could be great either way -- two great rooms in one. You might have to tame the TV dreams. The guys in my house don't want to live with limitations either. I know what that's like. Best Buy has TV/room size and distance from screen charts that might be helpful and sometimes it helps to mock things up. Don't rush -- taking a little time to get a feel or how you want to live in the space and how it will best work for you can save you from some expensive mistakes....See MoreSectional or not?
Comments (37)We have a long narrow living space and went with a sectional, but one custom made to fit the space just right. I'm only 5'0 and didn't want a big bulky one that would swallow me up or make my legs dangle when sitting upright on it, so the seating is deliberately designed to be low and not too wide. As someone with short legs and stature, I am never all that comfortable even in most chairs due to dangly leg issues and distance from back of my knee to rear, which is shorter than most chairs these days. I'm more comfortable when I can pull my feet up under me, and that tends to work better on a sofa. So custom made was the way for us to go, as-- for once in my life-- I wanted furniture that was comfortable for me to sit in!! Our kids are grown and gone though they do visit. And we entertain a lot. No t.v. in our house. When it's just us, we do spread out and lounge on it/ take naps in front of the fireplace. When we have company, there's plenty of space to sit upright and converse without it being awkward. As you can see, we also have a pair of chairs, and an ottoman that can be used for additional seating. Not shown is the kitchen -- sorry the lighting isn't that great in this photo -- you can just barely see in the foreground one of the four chairs at the kitchen island. These are counter height and provide additional seating. Because of the position of the island we thought this arrangement flowed a lot better than having a sofa acting as a barrier between kitchen and LR, which is what we had before (sofa and loveseat -- brought from our previous home). Also not shown is that the living space extends beyond the pair of chairs. That's where my home office is, so there's an additional two chairs there as well. If we want to watch a movie, we use my computer monitor to stream netflix, hubby turns around one of the chocolate brown chairs to face the screen, and I sit in my comfy office chair (a DWR recliner). When entertaining there's tons of separate conversational areas, even though the space is not enormous. People on the far sectional end / people perched on the near end conversing with those in the chairs / ottoman can be moved around closer to the sectional / people on the island stools, which can be optionally turned around towards the LR and the view / people in the office / people in the DR which has a table and 6 DR chairs / people out on the deck. Lots of flexibility. We figured someday when we sell future owners will probably want a flat screen t.v., so we did wire for that in multiple places. Future owner could put the t.v. above the fireplace, or on the back wall near the sliders where we have the art now. I could see a future owner flip-flopping this arrangement with a t.v. and console on that far wall. For us that was less than ideal as the best views are from the sectional, and we'd rather have the views than a t.v....See MoreLeather Sectional - Looking to decorate modern / traditional
Comments (9)A sectional is fine, but make sure it's the RIGHT SIZED sectional. Tape out the dimensions on the floor beforehand so you can really see how much space it will take up. Also, because it's dark leather (not a very modern style IMO)and bulky it will visually be heavier and dominate the space more....See MoreLet there be Light!! Comments (12)To have a light and bright room you have to have light. You have covered all the windows with heavy dark brown room darkening covers. What is outside of the windows? If it is your back yard and private I would simply remove all the window coverings. Blinds and curtains in both the living room and in front of the sliding glass door. $500.00 is not a lot of money to spend, but decorating does not have to be done in one sweep. A few bigger items when you have the $$$ to spend, little things when you have $ to spend. The first thing I would want to do is add a bit of pattern and color. Maybe this area carpet. It would pull in the blue from the painting over the fireplace and the red brows from the sofa, but lighten and brighten the look of the room. https://www.houzz.com/products/safavieh-porcello-prl6937b-9-x12-gray-multi-rug-prvw-vr~118042024 There goes $400.00. But it will be a building block for the rest of your decor that you can add a bit at a time. Things you will want to add/change over time Lighting - arch lights over the sofa and other lights. Remember - you need light to make a room look light and bright. Make sure you get white lampshades and bright lights. Daylight bulbs will add brightness. Look for lights with replaceable LED bulbs vs integrated bulbs. Almost everything with an integrated bulb will be 3000 K vs 4000 or 5000 k. Replacing the light bulbs in your ceiling fan with daylight bulbs should be able to be worked into your monthly spending budget. 3000 k won't make a room light and bright - it makes it warm and cozy. Paint - lighter, cleaner wall colors will make your home look lighter and brighter. Pick something from the area carpet. Once you start painting, expect to paint the majority of your home. If you lighten/brighten one room the next will look that much more dreary in comparison. Art - wall and sculpture or vases . . . Again pick things that have colors that are in the carpet. Upholstered chairs - re-upholster what you have or buy new. Again pick colors from the area carpet. Throw and pillows for on the sofa - Again pick colors from the area carpet. Paint the kitchen cabinets one of the blues or greens from the carpet if you paint the walls a white from the area carpet. I wouldn't add window coverings unless you need to for privacy or to hide an ugly view. Window film is an inexpensive window covering that doesn't filter out much of the light, but hides what is outside of the window. If/when you do add window coverings keep them light and somewhat transparent so that you don't block your desperately needed light....See MoreRelated Professionals
