Comments (34)So sorry everyone, I didn't subscribe to this post so had no idea there were other responses!! Remodelqueen - very sweet of you to offer, thanks!! We'll actually be visiting the states soon so we'll check out TJ Maxx. Thank you so much for the tip!!! Sheesharee - Another beautiful throw. So many options. Thank you too for the tip! Patricia - It's a custom sofa from a Canadian company called Gresham House. I think the quality is incredible, but definitely think it was pricey. What are the bad things you've heard about a sectional??? We were anti-sectional at first because I worried it would be like throwing all these people on one sofa, and I didn't like modern. But it works really well in our particular room, is comfy, allows lounging. I love it so much. Crescent - The kitchen lights are from a Canadian company called Turn of the Century Lighting. They are antique reproduction lights. The square ottomon is from Pottery Barn, called Sullivan. Krissd - Our granite is Bianco Antico. Thanks so much!...See MoreAre leather sofas/ sectionals passe?
Comments (22)I think the idea of any Brown, or any Taupe being a Neutral and that it will go with anything is something that will date current decorating trends. Genuine leather (just like granite) was Out of fashion for some time because of the popularity of synthetics during the mid-century period. My parents had a custom suede sofa that aged very poorly (it was brown and ended up with bluish black shiny wear marks on it) --the company paid to recover it, and offered black leather, and my parents picked black Naugahyde for it's bullet-proof ness. (Still in their house). Leather has become much cheaper, because the ways of processing leather all the way to processing the Dermis to look like the hide by coating it and painting it, and embossing it --has made "Leather" accessible at all price points (although the Bycast leather process I described can't be called "leather" in some countries). So the big, *relatively inexpensive "leather" sofa may be something that says early 2000s, as well as the "neutral" color of the sofa, being shoehorned into a room full of other colors....See MoreSofa? Comments (14)Is that the kitchen to the side of the other end of the room? I would definitely make that an eating/game table/homework/projects area, or if you don't need that, make it a separate reading/chatting space for when not watching TV. The two ideas could be combined. Why not put the TV between the doors? A flat screen can go on a console table or media stand and it looks like you could get a good size one there (45-50, maybe 50-60 inches?). Maybe not giant to ginormous, but plenty big unless that space is smaller than it looks. If you don't put a TV there, it has to go on one of the two end walls. That means the TV will either seriously limit your seating options on the stair end (sofa/love seat against the stairs will not be a good viewing angle, so you are probably looking at primary seating needing to float between the stair landing and the sliding doors and leaving traffic paths around it) or you flip and put the TV at the opposite end of the long room and the TV viewing is the cozy nook -- BUT the TV size may have to be limited by the space size. You can't sit on top of a really big screen. If your kitchen is off to the side, consider whether you will want to see the TV from there. It could be great either way -- two great rooms in one. You might have to tame the TV dreams. The guys in my house don't want to live with limitations either. I know what that's like. Best Buy has TV/room size and distance from screen charts that might be helpful and sometimes it helps to mock things up. Don't rush -- taking a little time to get a feel or how you want to live in the space and how it will best work for you can save you from some expensive mistakes....See MoreLeather Sectional - Looking to decorate modern / traditional
Comments (9)A sectional is fine, but make sure it's the RIGHT SIZED sectional. Tape out the dimensions on the floor beforehand so you can really see how much space it will take up. Also, because it's dark leather (not a very modern style IMO)and bulky it will visually be heavier and dominate the space more....See MoreCarol Jean
