Thanks everyone for the input. It sounds like the consensus is the S. masoniana is the correct species name, but that whether S. 'Congo' = S. 'Mason's Congo' is unclear, as is the issue of whether this is one of the very large growing varieties/clones. Someone please correct me if I got any of this wrong. Obviously it needed a new pot. I'm not sure if this was wise or not, but I gave it nine new pots. I should have paid more attention during the process as to exactly how many plants it appeared to be. It was clearly more than one plant, put together in the pot. That is what I expected. I assume the rhizome piece (lower left) might eventually form a new plant. This has been lying dry for a couple days. I'll add soil and follow its progress as well. I'm essentially going to leave these alone for a few months and see what happens. I gave a couple larger pots, but I don't have room for a lot of big pots. I haven't watered them yet, and I assume I should approach watering cautiously, particularly while it's cool. My growing area is highly protected and so far is frost-free, even during the freezes which hit California in January. Based on very limited local damage it's clear that I'm actually in zone 10, probably 10a. I'm fairly near the Bay and also at the base of the hills, which creates an interesting microclimate. So I'm going to keep the plants outside, once the current period of 50s/30s passes. It should be mostly 60s/70s and 40s at night for the next couple months, warming up mostly to the 70s/50s in the summer. I assume this is a favorable climate for these guys. Half of my small growing area is rain protected, and I'll put them there. It might be fun to stick one in the ground, but my space is limited (and it's probably not wise to do that while it's still the rainy season).

They are supposed to be open tomorrow at their old retail location, but if you plan to go, call first because of the low temperatures (919) 854-9892. On Wednesday they begin the final move of their retail operation 1/2 mile down Campbell Rd to the current wholesale location. There are many, many flats of older pansies and violas left for free.

I would take out the leaf from the ground, clean it and look it over. If he has roots, he will definitely be fine, he only needs some time to acclimatize in new conditions. And if there are no roots, then you can put him in a container with water, and then to the ground. But it's warm now, so even in the water itself it's rooted. I put a few leaves into a glass of water (3 weeks ago) and put on the balcony - the roots are visible on two.

Thanks Russ, I will repot the little one into a 4" pot tomorrow if I don't have a 3 1/2". I'm using Espoma C/S mixed with 50% pumice and a tiny amount of small bark pieces I had. Was going to add grit and pumice but ran out of grit. I planted the big plant into a maybe 2" bigger pot. Ignore the awful pink colored pot which was the only one I had that size. The outer lower leaves are almost touching the sides of the pot with about 2" of soil under the roots. The empty black pot is the same size pot the plant came in which was a tight fit. I can try and buy one that's between those two sizes if that would be better.....or plant it in the black pot? Yes, I meant dehydrated (couldn't think of the word). I will add some water tomorrow morning. I am looking forward to my masonianas getting bigger though I may have to get rid of some furniture! The first one I bought at a local nursery and it had no name, not even 'snake plant'. The second was purchased online and was labeled a whale fin sans. Then I read people called it a shark fin sans. Then I learned it was actually a masoniana. So wasn't sure what to call them so they wouldn't be insulted. Will start referring to them as masoniana. Thanks. PS: I also always add lots of extra holes to the bottom of the pots I use.
