Why is my plant dying?

So I finally managed to snag a variegated gollum and now its not looking so great. I dont know why. A little background on how I've been keeping it.

Its in a gritty mix of succy dirt and grit. I had a top dressing of crushed volcanic rock but removed it so I could better see the soil conditions.

Its on a shelf in a southern facing bay window with supplemental H.O. LED lights about 7 inches overhead. On sunny days it gets natural sun from about 730-330 but the LEDs are on from 730-6. The average temperature by the window is usually between 65-72F.

My watering schedule is usually about once a week but I've been using a long wooden stick to test on this one since its being such a pansy.

The leaves on it are softer than I would expect, certainly not firm like my standard gollum but not squishy soft. They are getting soft and just falling off. It started toward the bottom of the plant. It has developed some pink on it since I got it. I did suspect that it might have gotten too cold in the shipment to me but how long would it take for me to know if that were certainly the case? I have had this plant for 2 weeks. It cost me more than I would have liked and I will be very sad if it dies! Any help would be appreciated! I don't usually have this kind of issue and I'm just stumped on what to do.

It is possible that it got too cold during shipping time. It also may need more time to recuperate - you said you have it for only 2wks. Make sure pot has drainage hole, and do not over-water. How many times did you water it since received?

How were the roots when you got it?

Light 7" away is too far. I would lower it very slowly. Temps you mentioned are ok, just make sure it isn't cold and damp at he same time.

It appears that you have a reverse variegated gollum. Other growers suggest that the reverse type is usually a faster grower than the other variegated gollum type. I have several of both, and to me, they are both medium speed growers (not particularly fast or slow).

I agree with Rina's comments, but would also suggest you look at the air circulation around this one as well. You want to have good air circulation.

Hello: Did you know there's a tomato forum? http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/tomato/ But to answer your question, either because it didn't get enough light in winter, but more probably it's dying because its time is up! Tomatoes grow in the warm months, and then they die, like most vegetables. Rarely they CAN overwinter in zones 10-11, but even if they do, in my experience the fruit flavor goes way downhill the second season. "...replant it with the dirt that didn't get absorbed by the carpet..." Dorm carpet? It eats all kinds of things. Be careful your laptop doesn't fall. A pic or two certainly would help. Failing that, what type of soil is it in and does the pot have drainage holes and did you add any old fritos or corn curls to the soil when you picked it off the floor? tj

Sorry, should have said the spray must contact insects to kill them. It is not instant but they die off fairly soon. I even use it for tomato worms, works great for cabbage worms too. Agree about cutting leaves off where they have lost their green colour. Do not compost, get rid of them right away.

Finally found the one I have, which i think is also Rocky's: Pedilanthus Bracteatus http://www.mswn.com/media/plants/pedilanthus_bracteatus.pdf Still don't know why mine lost all those pretty leaves :-( Edit: Just found more info. They will lose leaves if cold enough. "Pedilanthus bracteatus has green cylindrical stems and widely-spaced leaves which are up to 4 inches long. During the cold season the plant loses its leaves and is a mass of green stems. In spring through fall, it produces odd flowers which are sandwiched between rounded red bracts. The pale yellow-green flowers, termed "cyathia" by botanists, are specialized structures unique to Euphorbaceae and their close relatives. Many parts of Pedilanthus bracteatus are covered with small hairs. The plant's milky sap can irritate the skin. Tall slipper plant is believed to be auspicious in some Asian cultures. It is easy to grow and requires minimal care. It prefers well-drained sandy soils.
