HELP with my new meyer lemon tree
Comments (19)Hi Lemontreenewbie. I also wanted to welcome you here. I too am new to growing citrus . I started with three trees and in a few weeks they have grown to seven and about to increase again. You will find so much valuable information here. At first I was overwhelmed like you but Mike, Brian, Steve,Cory and others are very knowledgable . They are very willing to share their experience and expertise . I have learned so much from them and they are very nice people . I have several of my trees in the 5-1-1 mix and they love it. The rest will be repotted as well. I bare rooted them and they are growing very nicely in the 5-1-1 . No loss of flowers .It is light and drains well. As per the advise I have a feeding schedule and give them 1 tsp of dyna gro foilage pro with a cap of vinegar in a gallon of water every Friday. I water in between if needed. Mike suggested using a wooden dowel in your pot to check if it needs water. That works well for me.I have had some bud drop but Brian has told me that is normal for young trees as they will only retain what they can support. Kind of natures way of balance I guess. Recently I got a greenhouse so I can overwinter them but of course you don't have that problem where you live.. I too have found that the nurseries do give conflicting advise . Listen to those I mentioned here. They have been very successful and know what works. I really ,really appreciate them . Best of luck with your trees. Comments (18)I very strongly doubt that your tree has a phosphorous deficiency. I have NEVER heard of a phosphorous deficiency in container citrus, when it is regularly fertilized with a NPK fertilizer. Phosphorous does not leach from a container, as does nitrogen and potassium. Nitrogen and potassium are both VERY water soluble and readily leach with every watering, but not phosphorus. All of the leaves that are turning yellow, and dropping are the older leaves on the tree. Your tree is withdrawing the nitrogen from the leaves (thus they are yellowing) to reuse in other part of the tree before discarding them. When a leaf no longer is capable of supplying its expected quota of energy to the tree, it is quickly discarded. There is no welfare program for citrus leaves. However, your tree is also under fed. If the tree's problem was other than aged leaves, you would be seeing yellow dropped leaves from the new leaves also. Also it is not wise to add this and that chemical in hopes of coming across a cure. First ascertain what the problem actually is then correct it. I'm sure it was also not helpful to the tree to let it remain in the same container and "soil" for 5 years. Fertilize the tree using a high nitrogen fertilizer. You can add vinegar if you wish, but there are much better ways to acidify. Organic acids such as vinegar, have an extremely short life....See MoreMy potted Meyer lemon tree lost all leaves 6 mo. Comments (6)Your tree will take it's time coming back after who knows what it went through, or will start putting on new growth as soon as tomorrow. I don't understand why you waited this long to put your tree outside? Why may I ask you? Mines just limp along in the dead of winter and barely hang on by spring, and would drop all their leaves of I waited this long. I would rather give them tons of sunlight and cooler temps, what I mean is no lower than the low 40's.Less stress, believe me on my trees and myself. f I held them hostage inside longer than 5 months they would do poorly, unless of course if mine were in warmth and full sun in a greenhouse. Did you ever tell us where you live? What zone you are? It's also hard to be positive with you in saying with confidence that it will do fine when no one knows or will ever know exactly the care you give it all year long, especially in doors. What we can say is that a good watering regimen, a good quality mix and a good quality fertilizer with the right pH will do wonders for any citrus grower and their potted trees) Mike)...See MoreNeed help with my Dwarf Meyer Lemon Tree... Comments (3)From the pic it looks like the wilted leaves are on one side. Is that so? It could be a case of too much light along with cool soil. Just a thought. It has a name too - winter leaf drop. Although, in my case I notice it more in late spring when I start taking my plants outside....See Moreponcirusguy6b452xx
