With mixed frame styles it is best to leave one hand's breadth between the pieces. To keep the grouping from being chaotic or feeling like it is floating away, make sure the bottom row of frames are all level, creating an anchor line. EDIT: The pieces above the bottom row can be arranged in a more random way. I wasn't suggesting a rigid grouping, just an anchor line.

I like what you have going so far. Unlike decoenthusiaste, I do not like when the bottom row is all level.

What works for me when doing a gallery wall is to start with the largest pieces first. I like to create vertical columns of art going up the wall with the largest pieces towards the bottom. Center the columns with the bottom piece. Try to have the same amount of space between each piece. Then use the smaller pieces outside the verticals.

Using my process, you have four vertical columns. You don't have enough pieces to go outside the vertical right now.

There are many ways to create a great looking gallery wall.

When doing an entire wall, I also like when a few pieces are outside of the normal viewing area, too high or too low.

I start at the top....if the top line is level, not much else matters. Smaller items can be closer together than larger ones.

I would keep all the photos of people in your hallway, and just use the other artwork in your dining area. You have some nice pieces. Woven wood roman shades or some other light filtering shades would be great on your windows, and help prevent the glare.

I agree @calidesign...that was our intention, so we’re trying figure out how to hang a couple of large custom portraits of our kids when they were a few weeks old in the stairwell. They are incredibly heavy and we live in earthquake country. Not sure what kind of pro to hire to hang! Maybe I’ll see how much it would cost to reframe them.

Working on the window coverings, but we’d keep the windows facing the dining wall open most of the time anyway because of the view. It’s north facing and today is pretty gray and rainy, so there’s more reflection than normal, I think. Thanks

That’s a good idea Skippack. I’ll check for space behind the seating, to make sure chairs can move around. The corner desk/computer station is there temporarily.

I really like the thought of hanging your family photos interspersed with other pieces of art. IMO, there's no need to relegate family photos to only certain spaces in the home, and how lovely it would be to look at an art/photo-filled wall while you dine that contain all of the places and things - and people - that you love.

ITA with @IdaClaire about the family photos. I think I have at least one family photo in every room of my home and in most rooms I have several. Nothing brings more joy to my life than glancing up and seeing a photo of my kid. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE art too but sometimes photography can be a work of art. I have a gallery wall of family photos in my living room.
