Granite counter edge - 1/2 bullnose or 1/2 eased with corner radius

Can't decide between a 1/2 bullnose edge OR a 1/2 eased edge with corner radius in a transitional kitchen.

1) Which edge shows the thickness of the slab better?

2) Which edge is prone to less chipping?

3) What type of edge is more popular today.

For the sink edge:

1) Should the sink corner have a 1/2 radius or 1/4 radius?

2) It's a rectangular sink - can the sink edge have a 1/2 bullnose?

Or would a 1/2 radius edge look better? Again looking for an edge that will be prone to less chipping.

3) Anyone has done a 1/2 bullnose edge around a rectangular single bowl sink?

Please help with any suggestions or experience you have.

This might be a little late on the advice but if not hope this helps.

1. 1/2 eased edge will show the thickness of your slab better.

2. 1/2 bullnose will be less prone to chipping in general.

3. Generally where i work we do mostly 1/2 eased edge, I'm gonna guess about 60%-75% of the granite/ quartz we do is eased edge.

Sink questions

1. The sink corner radius should match your sink. They should be taking your sink to the shop and using that as the template as the templates that come with sinks can be off.

2. yes a sink edge can have a 1/2 bullnose.

3. Personally i haven't, but have done them for clients before. Never had complaints about it.

@AFritzler - thanks so much for replying

I ended doing a 1/2 bullnose edge as did not want any chipping issue. My fabricator mentioned that an eased edge was most popular today- maybe because of the contemporary look with quartz. But I was ok with the 1/2 bullnose as my kitchen is transitional and not contemporary/modern . 1/2 bullnose also shows granite thickness and my pattern seems to flow over the top edge. An eased may have been a more solid look though.

Sink - I did a 3/8 rounded edge with a very, very slight positive reveal (thanks to advice from houzz). Corner radius my fabricator matched to the sink.

I am happy with the outcome, but it took a lot of researching what to do- lol

I would ask to see samples of whatever you are considering, since terminology does differ from fabricator to fabricator. Do a google image search of the terms "pencil edge granite" and "eased edge granite" and you'll see what I mean. What is labeled "pencil edge" on one site is called "half bull nose" on another. For some, "pencil edge" is practically a straight, sharp corner, and for others, it is quite rounded. Seeing a sample is your best way to avoid misunderstanding.

Hi Sarah in SF. I have a daughter named Sarah who lives in SF. My favorite name and my favorite city. :) In the Bay Area most slabs seem to be 2 cm with 5/8" plywood base. That's what I have in my kitchen. I have Caesarstone with a built-up eased edge. I just had my guest bath remodeled. I went with carrara on my vanity. The vanity has a built-in flush top, so I didn't need the plywood. So I didn't need a built-up edge to obscure the plywood.

Here's a quick reference: View A shows a cross-section of a c-top over a cabinet. The edge is refered to as a double-laminate bull-nose. It "caps" the top of the cabs thus making the tickness of the actual slab irrelevant since the edge gives the illusion of a very thick slab. View B shows a similar cross-section but a simplified ogee edge. Without the "cap" it is much easier to see just how thick (or thin) the slab really is. View C shows an overhang of the c-top. The thickness of the granite will vary depending on how far over the granite will hang past the cabinet unsupported. If memory serves me I believe 2cm will be ok for up to 6" and 3cm up to 12" (but don't quote me on that- my resources are at home). Often times, a KD will push for 3cm when, in the case of view A, it is completely unneccessary and resultes in a larger expense. I have found this to be particularly true when the KD is sourcing the granite through a "friend" or "business acquaintance".

nidnay it is crazy. Just from reading on this site what others had gone through I wanted to make sure I got what I envisioned. I went with pictures and the granite guy showed me a sample of what their eased edge would look like and it looked like what I wanted so we were good there. I said I wanted inside corners that were 90 degrees and outside corners that were 90 degree but slightly eased. Gave them pictures. I hoped for the best. Not much else I could do to express what my vision was. Luckily it turned out how I envisioned it would look. But you are right even with pictures sometimes things are interpreted differently.
