Followup to overwhelmed post & feedback needed on 1st floor plan
Comments (5)Oh Robin, I just read your original post and your recent post. First I am sending a hug. You might need to send one right back to me as we just bought a fixer-upper ourselves out in Scotts Valley. As I read your original post I kept thinking, yep, that's us. Yep, that too. (Except your listing photos are gorgeous and ours, well, they are not.) I do think you make a great point that people need to think about how they will use a house. We will likely lose one bedroom with moving some walls around (not load bearing, thank goodness) and I have people telling me how horrible that is for resale but this is our forever home and we need to do what is right for us. I don't have much to offer in the way of ideas but will send a barrel of emotional support up the peninsula to you. Good luck!...See MoreAwkward, small Living Room with stone fireplace and front door entry!
Comments (33)For the time being at least, leave the stone above the fireplace plain. If at some point in time in the future you find art you truly like, the you could add that ... but don't just look/settle for something there because you think you should want something there. Like recliners myself. Consider a pair of them. As long as you leave the walk path clear between front door and back of the house, how you define your sitting space as being separate from the walk space depends upon what works for you. A room sized rug would be worth considering and/or a long runner in the walk path might serve the purpose. You could invest in a couple waist high shelving units and put one on each side of the room with the back to the living/sitting area and the doors, whether glass or solid ... or even open shelves ... facing the entry hall. They'll need to be sized and weighted and/or secured to wall/floor so they'll not easily tip over so you could also add a lamp on each one. Think: upscale overhead kitchen cabinet with glass doors and finished board on top set atop a built base. #5 of 20 https://www.thespruce.com/ingenious-ikea-billy-bookcase-hacks-4006865 https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/sarreid-ltd-library-bookcase-rfd3082.html...See Morestone fireplace paint living room help!
Comments (7)I agree that the fireplace surround will look better if it is painted the trim color. And take down the wimpy valances, the blinds will look fine until you decide on something nicer. Right now your walls, fireplace, wood floors, rug and wood trim are all warm tones. Keep that in mind when you are choosing new items for the house. Most grays are cool-toned and often look "off" when put in spaces that are predominately warm-toned. Grays and tans can be mixed successfully but it's easier if you stick with one palette - warm or cool....See MoreBrighter color for great room with stone fireplace
Comments (2)Your other room is nice and bright. The room in question...from what direction does the light come? It looks like a color challenge with all the eves. I notice you have a low chair rail. What if you kept the RP under the rail, and painted above...walls, ceiling, eves the white of the wood work in an eggshell finish. Also, your furniture is dark..could you slip the pieces in white? Don't put a mantel on the fireplace....See MoreMark Bischak, Architect
