Vent in Front of Kitchen Sink
Comments (10)They may seem strange to you, but certainly just part of everyday life for people my age who remember when there were no paper towels and you did hang your wet kitchen linens on a bar attached to the inside sink cabinet's door, hidden from view. You also sometimes stored your mop buckets under there along and yes......maybe even your spuds and onions, damp cleaning brushes, your dish racks and drainers because most people didn't have dishwashers. It was a 'wet' environment. Like said by another poster, often the vents were just slots in the wood in the really older wooden cabinets. No........it didn't mean you had a 'problem' is was just the way is was then Brickeye. I assumed you were old enough to remember stuff like that but you must not be. You often even found vented doors in the metal kitchen cabinets popular in the forties...but not a separate vent like that. It may have even been retrofitted and not original with the cabinetry you had.....by then, judging from the style the vents were disappearing because there was the expectation of tightness in homes. I told you it wasn't 'decoration' it was for aeration and it is for aeration and had a purpose....See MoreKitchen Reno 2 Sink Auto Vents
Comments (1)I have used a lot of these and they work fine. You have to find out if they are accepted by your local code. If they are, I wouldn't worry about them. Another advantage is if something ever gets clogged up, they can be unscrewed in about 10 seconds and they make an easy place to run a snake. I just went through this in one of my apts. The tenant had poured a mixure of dirt and water from a plant pot in the kitchen drain. I unscrewed the vent and went down with a small snake to clear it out. Worked great....See Moreventing kitchen island sink
Comments (2)"I may have answered my own question. It seems the max. horizontal run after the loop vent is 6 ft for a 2 in pipe. Does this sound about right?" No. It doesn't sound right. There should be no limit at all for the length of a horizontal run or 'foot vent' that gets connected to a main stack. The only limit in most cases would be on the horizontal length of the trap arm between the sink trap and the island vent itself...which is limited to 8 feet for 2" pipe. See the links below for how Code compliant Island vents should be installed under most codes: http://www.plumbinghelp.ca/images2/Island%20loop%20vent.jpg http://www.terrylove.com/images/island_vent.gif If your kitchen island vent doesn't look like the above diagrams, you're not installing the island vent properly....See MoreToo many elbows in kitchen sink plumbing and needs a vent?
Comments (5)I am just curious if the home inspector caught this when you bought the house. This screams really bad DIY to me. I would start looking at anything that could have possibly been remodeled. I would probably fix it, just because I personally couldn't stand to be reminded of the stupidity every time I opened up the sink. Can you please crawl under the sink and take a few pictures for us that illustrate the opening where the sink and counter meet? Lets see if the shelf brackets are holding up the sink. You almost certainly have a vent back there. It also looks as if they pipe coming out of the disposal is sloped up, but that could be the picture. It looks like the very short pipe running parallel to the back wall between the two ells is also running up. The electrical wire comes in through something (I have no idea what that is, but if someone crammed their underwear into that hole, move now) then takes a trip around the barn, and visits the bottom of the cabinet and eventually gets to the disposal......See MoreJoe P
