Oh, I checked on my tree every month or so, in the cold cellar, giving it about a cup of water a month. I ate lots of fig tarts, and pies. .... made my own with honey.....I gotta have my honey every day. LOL Waited until April and started taking it out on sunny days. This year, I do believe I will start some cuttings. I only have so much room though, as I am really "into" raising brugmansia and also dahlia plants.

To usefully supplement the natural light that you already have, you will need more than one tube. Consider something like a pair of 40W tubes under each of the lower shelves that you wish to light. For the tall plants on the top shelf, think about mounting two or even four tubes behind the plants so they are getting light from both sides. Consider enclosing the back of the shelves with white board or card. There is little light coming from inside the room and you will reflect the fluorescent ight back onto the plants. If you want to actively grow and fruit your veggies during the winter, have them on 14 hours each day while it is light outside and an extra few hours either side.

Ankurt, yes I do use florescent lights indoor for most of my indoor plants. In the Winter, I will bring in some more sensible plants from my garden to protect them. I don't know what kind of specific lights to use that is best for the plants, but I'm using the regular florescent tubes and sometimes the compact flourescent light (daylight) to just give them some lighting to help their growth while indoor. So far, the plants I have indoor are Christmas cactus, lilies, lavender and mini roses. I had to bring my Panudus (pandan), Rambutans, Soursop inside when the thermometer dips down too much for their comfort level. One of my Rambutan began to show signs of leaf growth while indoor with the light, so I guess it must be liking the attention it was being given. Now that the weather is warming up, it's sitting happily outside in the sun. Just my own little experience with indoor lights. Hope that helps.

I love shelves like that too! Hanging pots can help with cramming, and combining plants that would have been sitting adjacent in the exact same conditions. A good way to ease into combo pots, see if you like them, is to sit small pots on the surface of bigger pots. If you decide you like looking at them together, and they really do all like the spot where they are, you can eliminate those smaller pots & put the little plants right in with the bigger one. Putting a shelf unit right in a window can be an option too, if you don't mind that it blocks most of the light for people.
