I have a friend that spent a lot of time playing scrabble in prison. I bet he would know. ;) I know dog gone...but no n or e...so I would be out of luck. Some of the words on 7 Little Words, I have never heard of, and only find them due to the process of elimination.

I’ve never heard doggo with that meaning! I wonder where it is used?

And oh, no, another game to keep me from doing the things I really need to be doing.

I play Scrabble in person once a week and online with multiple friends, and I never heard of doggo. I hope I get to use it one of these days!

So apparently it’s an adverb, as in “to lie doggo”, and the only etymology I’ve seen so far is coming from the noun for our canine friends (but also including wokves, I think). So, because they hunch down still when hunting?

It’s a fairly common expression in British and Australian English.

One dictionary suggests the etymology is from the expression “let sleeping dogs lie”.

Annie, I love the NYT Spelling Bee. I play it every day, and also do the printed version in the magazine on Sundays. If I can't get to the Genius level I call my husband over, and together we usually manage to figure out enough words to get there.

Do you have to subscribe? I tried to play but I can't get a single word (except doggo) that has at least four letters and an o. How do you see their list?

I love that game, too. Sometimes I can't make myself go to bed until after midnight, when the next day's puzzle comes out. I've been playing a few weeks and it seems to get easier to get to genius. I seldom give up until I do. Today, I hadn't played when I opened this thread, so I never would have gotten doggo without it! It probably put me over the top to genius level, but I may have gotten another word to get to genius. I'll never know. They use words repeatedly that I never seem to get, even though I've seen them in previous puzzles.

I am a subscriber to NYT puzzles...don't know if you need it for the Spelling Bee or not...you do need it for the crossword puzzles.

I do it in the a.m. Nothing like first thing in the morning being told you're nice, great, amazing and genius! Great way to start the day!

I just stumbled across doggo in a book I am reading by Jess Kidd - "Himself" . It easy to guess the meaning while reading it in context. "It......lies doggo beneath sideboards or under rocking chairs" Now the next step if for me to use it!

I love the Spelling Bee puzzles in the Sunday NYT magazine and online. I’m pretty persistent and keep plugging away until I get the 3-pointer and reach genius level. Although we occasionally count a word that is more obscure and not included in their list. Nice way to begin the day with coffee. The online version starts off quicker for me because you can use 4-letter words.

Have you ever gotten all the words and the 'Queen Bee' pop-up? I've only done it twice.

I do the magazine puzzles every week and stick with them but the online puzzles less often so I generally quit before I get all the words. No, never reached the Queen Bee level. ☹️

No, I haven't reached Queen Bee because I'm usually all in by the time I get to genius! So I stop looking for words at that point. The word that finally put me into genius today was nabob; took me forever to get that.

Does everyone know about this site? I like looking at it because it doesn't tell you the answers unless you click on a link, but it will tell you how many points you need for genius, which keeps me playing if I'm only 3 points short. I've not ever gotten the queen bee as I usually quit once I hit genius, and when I look at the next day's answers, there's always something very obscure in there that I'd never get.

I find I struggle as there are words that I never realized are a single though compound word. Most often those seem to be the pangrams as in yesterdays and today's.

I've sent in to add words to the acceptable list but I don't think they ever have. For example, I think toto should be a word as "in toto" meaning in total. I'm also surprised yoyo isn't a word...unless a trade name. Today I tried for agonal, which is a word, a medical term, but it wasn't on the list.

I also go crazy when you can get wahoo and yoohoo and all sorts of other words like that that have multiple potential spellings.

Annie, agreed. I've learned to do mama and mamma, hooray and hoorah, etc. I tried agonal, too, and wish they would get rid of some of the nonsense words and put in more actual ones!

“In toto” is a Latin phrase, so perhaps it doesn’t include foreign language words.

Yeah, colleen, they don't accept foreign language words except when they do. It's not very consistent.

Annie, it's usually spelled with a 'y' on the end. They accept that!

I've seen 'lying doggo' before in writing from England.

The spelling bee in this Sunday's magazine is tough. I've gotten two pangrams, but only a handful of other words.

On the bright side, there's also a 'Split Decisions' puzzle, which I really enjoy.
