kitchen cabinet choices/pricing

Hello,

I have been getting multiple estimates for a kitchen renovation/addition we are planning to do this spring. I'm having a hard time choosing an actual cabinet. We have been quoted as low as 8000 from Home Depot for American woodmark, 8500 for JSI, and 12500 for diamond vibe with free upgrade to all plywood box. I don't want to buy the worst cabinet but I also don't want to spend more just to get a cabinet that is also considered cheap crap. Does anyone have any input, should I spend more to get diamond, is it not even a better cabinet?

All those brands on on the lower end of cabinetry construction. A lot of people like their Diamond cabinets, but as far as construction standards go, even at those amazingly high prices you're still not getting what would be considered a true mid-grade cabinet. Some people have found Shiloh to be a nice compromise between low-end and mid-grade in quality but with a budget price. If you check with Lowe's, they will periodically run sales on cabinets that can be quite good so you could get a discount on Diamond there. If price is the driving force, then I doubt you'll gain a whole lot going with Diamond. Don't forget about Ikea. A lot of people are very happy with Ikea and get fantastic pricing. Their construction standards and tolerances are good, but just beware to not go with really wide cabinetry from Ikea or you'll run into sagging issues. Your area of the country is a factor as well, as far as any manufacturers that would be close to you so you'd save on shipping costs and be able to sink more into the actual cabinetry pricing itself.

I don't like the blatant advertising, but I sure do agree with the concept. There just isn't enough wood from responsibly managed forests to account for all the Brazilian cherry or Brazilian walnut or other exotic wood floors being put down. Worst part is the 10-20 years from now, light floors will be trendy so many of these dark colored exotics will be ripped out and replaced with ash, beech, and maple. In the end-both the rain forest and the lumber for which it was destroyed will be gone.

Pine is defnitely the softest of the three choices. The grain of oak is more pronounced and generally can be seen through paint - not necessarily a bad thing, just need to know if this will work for you. Maple is generally considered the hardest and smoothest of these three choices. When looking for some savings in our kitchen, we ended up having our painted cabinets made from poplar. A soft wood, but handled paint nicely. In use for about a year now with a ding here and there, but nothing major and since ours were "distressed" a bit anyway, this is not a big deal for us. For those of you complaining that a design professional wants to get paid for their work, I'd say they are providing a service to you that you can't do yourself, and they are entitled to be paid. What they get paid is obviously negotiated, but frankly, at minimum, a junior design professional should be paid $100 per hour for their work. Senior talent goes much much higher. It makes sense that the fee is credited if your designer is attached to selling a product. But if you don't buy their goods, they certainly should be compensated. Of course, never make the assumption when you go to the kitchen store that they are giving you the design services for nothing. Ask first before you start. No one gets hurt then.

Many cabinet companies use conestoga doors, we use them for all of our doors and drawer fronts as well as mouldings and most accessories. I can tell you that they are of exceptional quality, and you would have trouble finding someone more picky than me, as both a homeowner and a contractor/cabinetmaker. We build our own cabinets, but I hear the RTA cabinets are great and really easy to assemble, because of the spline system they use. Their finishing is top notch, and the construction of the doors is very solid and well done. We got about 6 or 7 quotes before deciding. Check out Lowes Kraftmaid too, we just had ours installed and they are great quality, beautiful, not one issue. We caught a pretty amazing sale and was thousands less than the others. Great customer service too, we needed a matching can of paint and more toekick and it's being sent to us for free.
