Bona Traffic HD - Matte vs Satin Poly finish?
Comments (12)i just got the matte finish on plain old (new) white oak in my kitchen remodel. They used amber stain because they said it would match rest of house best (old white oak floors that have yellowed). Even though I might have preferred lighter I was OK with that. But decided to hold my ground and asked them to use the matte finish which the floor guys were sort of against. I love the finished product!! It's super smooth, no shine and makes a more modern clean look. It dried nearly instantaneously and they did the whole thing in a day from sanding to top finish. Amazing what new products and technology have done to transform floor finishing. (I last had floors done in around 2001 - big mess). I sure hope this stands up because I love the look. I recommend it. And no smell at all after it dries (same day!)...See MoreMinwax stain under Bona Traffic HD
Comments (45)Y123,,I had to research it, but yes! Crayons make an excellent filler for small gouges or holes in resilient flooring. Select a colour that closely matches the floor. Melt the crayon in the microwave on medium power over a piece of greaseproof paper, until you have a pliant glob of colour. With a plastic or putty knife, fill the hole. https://www.woodshopnews.com/columns-blogs/filling-voids-knots-and-dents For smaller voids like thin cracks and pinhole knots, wax is great way to go. Wax comes in a variety of colors and a few hardnesses. For very small voids no larger than 1/16”, I like to use rub-in blending sticks. In a pinch, crayons will work. Simply rub it in or use a heat gun to melt the wax and drip it into the void. After it hardens in a few seconds, remove the surrounding smear by rubbing the wax flush with a hard block of wood wrapped in a cotton rag and a few drops of mineral spirits. I believe you can mix a little wood stain into wax and make your own color. you don't have to use a crayon (unless you have the exact color crayon!)...See MoreProCoat Splashdown vs Bona HD Traffic wood finish
Comments (1)Splashdown is a sealer, not a surface finish, so durability is not an issue. Bona Traffic is a surface finish. Bona makes FIVE water based sealers (in addition to wiping stains) and calls for a sealer BEFORE applying Traffic. Either your contractor is using it wrong or you've recounted the procedure incorrectly. In your scenario the Splashdown would require a surface finish over the top and the Traffic would require a sealer underneath. You need to clear this up with your contractor....See MoreWater based floor finish (Traffic HD) on VG fir floors
Comments (3)We went with water based finish (I think satin) on our white oak floors because we do not like the orange/amber tones as oil based finishes age. Have not seen Douglas fir used for flooring in our area. The only thing we discovered that we did not expect was that when the painters came in for final touch up, they splattered some paint on the floor and everywhere they cleaned it up, it affected the finish. We had to have a third coat put on all the floors. Glad we did because they looked better, but wasn't expecting the extra cost....See MoreW
