It's saying 81º right now. Can you believe this? First, you freeze then you sweat, then we will freeze again at night.

That is sort of like s/e Texas. And since I moved here, East Texas, very much the same. Our cold nights are a few degrees colder than where we lived on the coast, but not more than 10 degrees at most. Personally, I don't like cold weather. I am sure it is whatever you get used to. Last night was 30 degrees, but we are on a warming trend again now. I don't mind winter when it is one day, followed by warm weather. Then we get another cold day, but it is bearable to me because I know it will warm right back up.

Jody is in Florida now. He went to his hometown of Cedar Key and was gone 9 days. Came home for a few days, and went back. I don't know why he just didn't stay to begin with. He needs to come home in a few days though, because I am running out of hay. My hands are too bad to hook up the trailer. We go back to the coast to buy hay. It is better than what we can find around here.

Checking weather channel earlier, it sounds spring-like all the way north of you in Massachusetts too. And us? We have an arctic ice cube predicted to drop on us beginning tonight. A few days not above freezing, unusual for Washington coast. If it were just us, it wouldn't make me anxious but we go weekly to see Mom, encourage her to eat, do her laundry, check in with her care coordinator. 130 miles one way.

Hi, Thanks for replying, but my reason for posting the question is because I've already experienced damage to several tillandsia from receiving too much rain. I know what the signs are... the inside "cup" area gets brown spots which looks similar to rot on the inside of bromeliads when they hold water for too long. Eventually they'll rot and smell. So, there are many that won't handle this much water and I'm hoping to hear from someone who can recommend ones that can handle a lot of rain. Just for extra info... due to too much rain I've lost some Butzii, Bergeri, Houston 'Cotton candy', Flavo-Bracteata, Rodrigueziana, Ionantha x Fasciculata, Ixioides and Exserta to name a few that were not able to take so much rain. Oh, and the xerographica can't handle this much rain. They quickly spot when water sits inside of them for more than 20 minutes at a time. I've even tried growing the xero's upside down, but they eventually grow outward and then up again so that they are once again face up and collecting water. Even some of my xero's that are still upside down turned spotted from being too wet. They do not like to be wet at all and they get ugly pretty fast. Even certain fasciculata have turned brown in the center, most likely ones which normally grow in dryer climates. So, if anyone can suggest names of some tillandsia that can handle being wet for a period of time I would love to give them a try. Thanks!! Jim

Those are not south fl averages. We are in the 90s from about june 1 through september. We also have humidity higher than that in june through sept. The palms grow the fastest in this time of year.

Thanks for looking everyone! Bananatree94, Thanks for the IDs. You were definitely right on all those bird ID's and possibly the orchid ID too (I'm not sure since I dont know much about orchids!). Apparently Disney does protect their orchids, so they might have been given extra protection, but they were at least 25 feet above the ground, so I dont see how protection would be a very easy thing to accomplish! Someone ID'ed the Jubaea x Butia as a Syaragus x Butia, so it probably is just a very Butia looking Mule palm. Either way, its nice to see some palm hybrids on the property! Lzrddr, I think you might be right about that White Elephant Palm being potted. It does look like there is enough bare room underneath it for it to fit a pot. I did here that White Elephant Palms are somewhat frost tolerant and since the palm in this pic was in deep shade, its possible that it has not seen much of a frost even after last winters low temperature of 28F. Usually Orlando winters are above freezing, but they have not been so lucky with the past 2! Im sure that the Red Sealing Wax palm has to be potted up because even with heat, I dont see how they could survive last years Brutal winter. They can barely handle temperatures in the 40s! Jim, the plants definitely were one of my favorite about Disney! I was happy to see someone else taking pictures of plants so I didn't feel too alone, but plant lovers were definitely the minority! Planning a Florida beach wedding in August is a gamble, it's the middle of hurricane season! Keep up with the hurricane news, there might be nothing and there might be a monster. It will be oppressively hot and humid. Being on the coast will help a little with the humidity b/c there will be a good breeze. The sun will feel like a hot iron on your skin, so avoid the temptation to wear something sleeveless and instead wear something very light weight that covers your shoulders/arms, light in color and breathable. And that dries fast, in case of those sudden hard afternoon rains. Think practical, skin protection as well as cool, when you choose your clothes and you will be glad you did. Put your hair up if it's long and wear a wide-brimmed hat. I don't mean to make you feel worse. I just don't want to lie to you. Having lived in south FL for several years, I always described that time of year as "oppressive heat." I didn't want to leave the house, everything outside (the car, the sidewalk, the front door knob) was too hot to touch. The sun just has a different intensity in FL than up north. The sun will stay intense right up until it sets. On the other hand, the Gulf coast is very pretty, the sunset will be a beautiful setting for a wedding, and hopefully you'll be so wowed and have such a good time that the heat will be second in your mind.

So here in PA on the 11;00 news last night it was 72 at the airport in Harrisburg. in January. Crazy. It's been warm all winter.

Saturday was gray and drizzly all day, ending with a fast moving storm with 50 mph winds and torrents of rain. Sunday was resplendent. Sunny, 70 deg F beautiful weather for cleaning up the debris from the previous day.
