Make sure the correct size ducting is installed. It will say in the instructions that came with the unit. If the ductwork runs through an unheated space, it needs to be insulated. The roof vent should have it's own baffle plate integrated into the vent and a wire grating to keep out livestock. A written description of the intended work would be nice. If you're more comfortable with a written, signed contract, ask for one. Is he running the electric or was there a line from a previous installation. Around here(LI,NY) he would need to be a licensed electrician to do the work. The need for a permit would depend on your local requirements. Ron

Hi everyone. Been reading a lot on this site and got tons of good info. Just purchased and installed a Best by Broan 48 inch range hood with external 1200 cfm blower. Used rigid duct, Fantec silencer, one 45 degree bend, one 90 degree and a total physical length of 13 feet - calculated at maybe 25 feet. Hood is super quiet - basically you can not hear anything until until about mid speeds (variable adjustement) and max speed is mostly lots of air rushing thru the baffles - lots of air. Question - how do I know if the hood blower is working properly. For example I don't feel lots of air being drawn in down below the baffles. Air is felt about 6 inches below the baffles and a sheet of paper will stick to the baffles as others stated for a test. Should the air being drawn in be felt lower or is this about normal. I also had a window open when testing. How much below the baffles should I feel air being drawn in when on full speed Thanks

We bought a zline on Amazon (30 inch) due to budget constraints, and although the specs said 640 cfms, I doubt it is anywhere close to that. It just barely moves the air around, and is so loud I can't stand to cook under it! I just don't think these bargain vent hoods are worth the savings, and wish we had ponied up for a real hood. Of course, ymmv. That said, you might be safer purchasing from Costco with their generous return policy and generally decent quality of products. Hth

Was able to get a hold of zline. Issue is production of the chimney. They have none and I was told it would be a long time and to order something else. Was also told the 24" might be okay, but with a 28" range, it really should be bigger. Modernair had great technical support and got back to me right away, with a quote of about $4600 to make something similar to the $1400 zline.
