New Year's Flowers

Happy 2020! I took these pictures in my garden, Finch Arboretum in west Spokane, and Spokane Community College in east Spokane.

The last of my Crocus speciosus, blooming since October

A sweetly scented viola, on my patio

Helleborus niger 'Jesko'. I can't believe I have to bait for slugs in winter!

Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox). The perfume combines sambac jasmine and Juicy Fruit gum.

Witch hazel, at Finch Arboretum. This plant's been blooming since October

Viburnum 'Dawn'

Viburnum farreri, one of the parents of 'Dawn'. Close!

Libocedrus decurrens, the incense cedar. The foliage is powerfully fragrant when crushed

Witch hazel again. This one is at SCC.

Choysia x 'Bluestone'. The flowers look like citrus blossoms, but have a very different fragrance, and the foliage is also aromatic. Most sources give these shrubs a zone 7 or 8 rating, but they're probably 6B, at least in the Northwest. My 'Aztec Pearl' choysia is 8' tall and shrugged off -3F.

Azara microphylla, from Chile, in winter number 3. Vanilla scented puffball flowers in early spring.

Here's the choysia, with the azara lurking in back, in their east facing bed next to a greenhouse at SCC.

That's it for now. Spring's coming!!!
