Comments (29)I've only been an orchid addict for about 3 years - mainly have phals, a dendrobium, a vanda and now 2 cattalyea's. I live in Zone 5 (PA) and my phals and den rebloom with many large blooms every year. They sit on or near my window sills and I do not add any humidity, though I do have them grouped, so that may help. I also (due to fear of bugs/aphids) do not put them outside for the summer. Maybe I've just been lucky - but, I also do not mist - unless I just mist the aerial roots. I'm afriad I'd get crown rot. This coming winter, I may add a vaporizer to see if it makes a difference. Maybe humidity for what I'm growing isn't truly necessary, maybe they just adapt to the growing conditions....See MoreMaybe you don't have insomnia
Comments (9)Actually a study was done to see how people sleep without the interruption of modern artificial lighting: In the 1990s, a sleep scientist named Thomas Wehr discovered that everyone sleeps biphasically when subjected to natural patterns of light and dark. In Wehr's well-known study, he subjected participants to 14 hours of darkness per night, and found that they gradually shifted to a routine of taking two hours to fall asleep, then sleeping in two four-hour phases separated by about an hour of wakefulnes - "a pattern that exactly matched Ekirch's historical findings. As I have gotten older I also tend to wake a few hours after I fall asleep. I'm awake for a while, then fall back asleep for a few hours. It's comforting for me to know that it's nothing to freak out about, that it's actually a natural human sleep pattern. Here is a link that might be useful: Biphasic sleep study info...See MoreSomething to ponder before buying anything
Comments (6)It has also put the U.S. economy in a precarious position. 70% of our economy is based on consumer spending and if we only buy things we truly want or need, our economy would suffer. This is so important. There's something wrong with our worldview, where we measure achievement and a healthy economy by pursuit of "The Shiny". And it pulls our values in the wrong direction. It shouldn't be about "new", it should be about quality of life, sustainability, thinking about what's going to be worthwhile for the generations to come....See MoreOllieJane
