Comments (16)For me, the appeal of audiobooks is the ability to do two things at the same time. I don't have the patience to sit in one place and read a physical book for very long. But I do love to read. With audiobooks, I can read when driving, when exercising, when alone doing nothing or mindless tasks (if my wife isn't home or is elsewhere)., etc. As far as being read to is concerned, if you listen to the news on the radio, isn't that the same as someone reading you newspaper articles? Podcasts have gotten very popular and I listen to them regularly too. I never listen to the radio and watch little TV. For those who DO listen to podcasts or the radio, listening to an audiobook is a similar experience with one exception - you can't divert your attention to think of something else, or be mentally distracted. If you do, if even for 20 seconds, you'll find yourself a bit lost (like turning two pages instead of one with a physical book) and you'll need to go back. I've learned that when I need to think about something else, I pause the playback, do so, then resume listening. My audiobook habit was developed decades ago. A pioneer in the field was the company Books On Tape, who had a printed catalog of available books in cassette tape format sent in boxes with prepaid return postage. One book could be 10 cassettes or more. I started using them in the 1980s but limited my consumption because it was expensive - $15-$20 per book at the time, more for longer books.. I'd do no more than one every month or two, listened to in the car while driving. Today, the format of digital books and the ability to download most anything from the internet is much more compact and convenient. I do prefer small MP3 players but smartphones work equally well. With Overdrive from multiple libraries and even CDs available from libraries that I can rip, I rarely have to buy anything from Audible but I do when I can't get a book I want from other sources. It does take practice at first, for the first several books or more, to get good at focusing one's attention and turning off side thoughts. An unexpected benefit though is that you'll become a much better listener, with the discipline to concentrate on someone speaking and avoid mental distractions....See MoreFloof-ish! But the place I work is a secure place and you need special clearance to get in, and he lost that clearance when he stopped coming through here for work. I cannot leave when I get here since I am the only person in this department for those 12 hours, and no deliveries are allowed. I just sucked it up. Kathsgrdn your potluck tales make me giggle. Lots of times other departments will have some sort of party or special meal for themselves. Sometimes its not meals but just something special like cake or doughnuts. They always bring me something. Always. I never know when they are planning something and I am never asked to bring anything because as they put it I cannot actually join them for the party because I cannot leave my area for very long at all. But they always bring me something. There are 4 different shifts. I work with 2 sets of them regularly, because everyone else rotates from days to nights but we do not. I work with the other two when I am filling in for coworkers. All 4 shifts will bring me something from their parties. They do not do that with any of my coworkers or supervisor and it just grinds their gears. And they are annoyed to hear how happy the other workers are when they see that I am here instead of them. I think its funny that they do not understand why. Its very easy and much more pleasurable to be nice and friendly to people. It is so much easier to be easy to work with and helpful than standoffish and lazy. And its better to try to have a little fun an laugh a little bit when you are working for 12 hours than to grump and whine that you are there. And when you are that way to the people around you, especially ones you work with, and more especially when they are 99.9% men, you get free cake and unsolicited doughnuts and an occasional grilled steak and baked potato. (I feel like women feel more obligated to include everyone in order to not be perceived as witchy with a b, and men do not really care like that. They are going to reciprocate both kindness and rudeness) It probably helps that I do the decorating and treats for the holidays, which they all enjoy, while the others in my department kinda make snarky remarks about it. I enjoy sending my less fortunate coworkers pictures of the treats I get when I am here. :) I do not eat "potluck" food but I will for sure enjoy a steak I see them grilling fresh right across the road from me........See MoreFloof! Silence or noise?
Comments (36)At work, I would always listen to music while designing furniture, building furniture models, or doing CAD drawings. However, I would not listen to music while writing computer code, back in the 1990s before Windows, and for DOS computers. I was very good at dBase programming, but this was not appreciated by other people at work because they did not understand it. They did like the results, however. I also listen to music while driving, sewing, and sometimes cooking, but generally not while eating. At the lunchroom at work, there was a TV, and people would watch Jerry Springer, which I hated, and so I would go home for lunch. My commute was only 4 minutes, and so this was easy. The absolute worst background sound that I can think of is football or basketball games on TV. I hate the sound of the announcers, and I hate the sound of the crowd. Obviously I never go to any of these games in person either, or watch them on TV. I don't like baseball, hockey, or soccer either....See More- 6 years ago
