Advice on painting Rim Joist/PT Frame/PT Stair Risers
Comments (8)Well, we were gonna do Azek, but decided against it for two reasons: 1. Price We went with the IPE.....it extended our budget so adding the Azek on top of that would have been tough to do. 2. Install We already have the floor down. We have a 1" overhang all around. If we were going to add the Azek that would mess up the overhang. Are there any products similar to Azek that aren't board thickness? That way I could still keep the 1" overhang.... Thanks....See MoreReplacing carpeted stairs with wood stair treads/risers.
Comments (16)Most economical = carpet. After that, a solid finish (wood, cork, vinyl, tile, stone, etc) will require all the extras. Painted stairs will work...with plenty of elbow grease and with the FULL UNDERSTANDING the paint will wear/chip/"patina" inside of a few years. There are ways to lay a runner on the stairs and then trim out the edges of the tread/riser with wood-looking stuff. This will cut the cost in half of what I mention above. The other option is to place the runner and PAINT out the edges....creating a faux-painted-wood look which could be very handsome yet extremely practical. Notice how carpet keeps on coming up again and again? Yah. There's a reason for that. Those are builder grades stairs made for carpet....See MoreExterior colour help! Comments (4)I think stick with the charcoal colour for most. I would do the cedar soffit colour on the stairs etc. Where are you located? This looks like Vancouver!...See MoreAny advice about stair riser stickers?
Comments (4)You will need to stick the tiles to something other than the oil poly. Adhesives do NOT like poly...especially oil based. The chemicals in the adhesive will cause issues with the oil based poly...and eventually the stickers will get gooey and then slide down. To get this to work you will have to do one of a few things: 1. Sand off the polyurethane completely (do NOT use a chemical...the chemical itself will then prevent the stickers from sticking...it's not worth it) 2. Rough up the poly and then prime it with a few coats of Zinsser primer....then glue the stickers to that....but I would do a little experiment with a piece of plywood and the Zinsser primer. In essence you need to SEPARATE the adhesive on the tiles from the polyurethane on the stairs. It will be a lot of work...(how many weekends would you like to give up??) but it could be quite cute....See MoreRuthL
