Paint Design Dilemma

Paint color to go with cosmic black granite

We are remodeling our main floor. Cream colored cabinets and cosmic black granite countertops. I can’t decide on a paint color for the walls. The kitchen will be open to the dining room which opens to living room. I will mention I would like to stay away from yellows as my walls now are SW Blonde.

Paint colors are your last choice to make so wait until all the stuff is at least chosen all your furniture will have an effect on what color to paint.. When in doubt I usually choose a grayed green for wall color it is very neutral and often builders want walls painted before floors go in so that is my go to I like Gray Wisp from BM so maybe look at that it would certainly work with the kitchen.

So you planning on painting the entire space because IMO since it is all open that is the way to go. The color needs to go with everything not just the granite those cream cabinets will be a big issue when choosing color but you need to post the whole space not just a snippet of the kitchen.

Yes I agree. We are remodeling the whole main floor. We have a late 70’s tri level. So other than the cabinets and countertop, which have been purchased, we are basically starting from scratch.

Sorry, I should have mentioned polished - my wife wanted shine and didn't like leathered or honed. The slabs we picked have less mica and quartz than others we saw (they still have a nice amount), and the blacks are a little darker than others that had more of a charcoal or dark gray type black. Thanks!

Hi FooDee. Your granite is really gorgeous! Do you have some sample tiles you could stand up against the wall and take some pics of? I don't know about most people, but that makes a difference for me in commenting on a request for backsplash help. Here goes my two pennies...I don't like to use a different stone for a backsplash than the countertops. In fact, the only time I like a stone splash is when it's marble. I usually prefer a ceramic, porcelain, what-have-you, man-made tile. But that's just me. If that were my beautiful granite, I wouldn't want anything with a pattern or wild color to distract from it. Could you try some tiles that pull out the vanilla-y, caramel-y tones from the counter? Nothing tumbled because you've got that going on the floor already and your granite reads much more chic than that. Oh, and you mentioned beige. There are LOTS of shades of beige out there. Don't dismiss them. Go to a few tile stores and get some samples. Then show us. We love to vote on bs tiles! :)

Not a fan of this granite but willing to live with it IF I can get lighter painted cabinets. Need to replace all doors as some are broken. Hardware too. Will hire a pro to paint. Will change wall color too, once cabinet color is sorted out. Kitchen faces east with lots of windows, so very bright/light. Lots of ceiling lights. Walnut trim throughout the house which is staying. Tile floor is beige/sand color. Doors have been routed in a u-shape to accept hinges. Can’t change the hardware and keep the doors without major woodwork repairs to each door. New doors will allow more options. What color to paint cabinets first, then walls. Buttercream? Off White? Again, the countertops are very dominant. Suggestions?

The combination of backsplash and counter strikes me as rather more modern but the bit of cabinet that I can see looks more "country" or rustic. I think I would consider painting the cabinets navy (if that will work with the rest of your house and the amount of light in the kitchen), and get sleeker knobs and pulls. If you decide to go with a white, make sure you paint a large sample to be sure it is the correct white to go with the grays (one with more of a gray or blue undertone, not yellow or pink)

If your current furnishings were chosen to go with the SW Blonde and you aren't completely replacing them, then BM Carrington Beige is a beautiful slightly grayed yellow beige that will work with what you own but still feel fresh and updated. It will also pair nicely with the creamy cabinets.

With Black and cream as the only two unchangeable colors the world is your oyster.

The only limitation is figuring out what colors will make your heart sing when combined with black and cream.

I think it's much easier to find the tone that would go with black granite than with the cream cabinets. And you actually need to find the right tone that will balance out the whole space and tie elements together. What are the other colors in your kitchen? It may be helpful to see the rest of the kitchen before making a suggestion. But by looking at your cabinets, floor, and granite, I believe cold tones of beiges or grays would work well.

Thank you for the suggestion. I believe you’re right. There really isn’t any other colors as we will be gutting the kitchen and knocking out some walls. So basically a blank slate. I have been on some other threads and see a common idea of subdued greens work really well so I’m thinking of either a gray green or going totally monochromatic with cream on walls and doing some accent colors.
