My new kitchen already outdated!!
Comments (23)I don't understand how additions can be out if the space is too small. I would rather buy a properly done house with addition for a beautiful kitchen than a redone small kitchen. I also don't think islands are and in/out thing. My island makes my kitchen function. Under counter fridges are great drinks, veggies draws ect but what about my big jug of milk and marinating roast? I love the look of a gas and the function of it. So in my design book it is in. I did chose quartz but I did consider some beautiful granites. If everyone had the same countertop than it would become a fad. I have nickel hardware because I like the look and it doesn't show fingerprints quite so easy. All my plumbing fixtures and door handles (with the exception of a few vintage brass) are all brushed nickel....See MoreContemporary kitchens getting outdated??
Comments (13)Beautiful kitchens beachlily and sixtyohno. Thanks for the advice. I think my likes are influenced by exposure but I'm pretty slow to hop on the band wagon of current trends and i definitely don't change furniture ( or accessories for that matter) every 10 years. I guess I just don't want to make a "mistake" because I don't plan on changing it again for a long time. I think both kitchens work in this house as it was built late 90s. Can anyone comment on how the painted white wood cabinets hold up with time. We currently have builders grade cabinets and some of the finish is wearing off, especially by the stove and sink area. We've lived here for about 3 years but it was already wearing by the time we moved in. As an aside it took me about 4 hours to lightly sand the grime and grease built on the laminate counters and cabinets...nasty!! First thing we did was put in a much better vent hood. An advantage with the painted wood is if I really do get bored, I can repaint them another colour. (Won't need any major overhaul since i'll already have the best functioning kitchen--from input from GWers). Anybody have any pisc with those glossy type cabinets? What are they made of anyways? How's the maintenance? Sorry, I'm not really knowledgeable about this stuff...yet. Really in the preliminary stages and I'm glad I found this website. Comments (16)Hi Laurie--the range is pretty, isn't it? It's a Lacanche (the 'Cormatin' model). There are many enthusiastic posts on the Appliance forum if you want more information. The hood is from Modernaire ventilating--they were able to color match to the range color, since it is a standard 'RAL' color (RAL 9001). For the dishwasher and fridges, I went with cabinetry overlays as other have suggested. Since my kitchen is teensy (7x10-ish), I think the cabinetry overlays give a better illusion of longer runs of cabinetry. In a normal or large kitchen, probably not as much of a consideration. I'm really happy with how the overlays turned out--very discreet! Here are a couple of pictures (sorry, I haven't gotten around to taking new pictures with the backsplash complete....) Here is my dishwasher (18" wide model next to the sink) And here is my undercounter refrigerator setup--fridge/freezer drawer set, plus a second 15" unit (you do what you can in limited space!)...See MoreIs white leather furniture outdated or is it still in style?
Comments (2)I agree: How you incorporate an object in your environment makes it "in style". Everything old is new again with the right accessories; wall color; location. What makes a thing hip and fresh is your love of it, and the tailoring. I found a book about the designer Steven Gambrel, which I felt great simpatico with---but I did not have his budget or scale. What I took from him was his bravery at mixing it up. Embrace your vision---or be like me and borrow an others until yours can find feet of it's own! Viva white leather sofa!...See MoreJames Bennett
